ABIODUN GIWA: Rutgers University 2021 SPAA Capstone Portfolio
- An Introduction
The Capstone is the climax of three years of class attendance and learning about the everyday management of human society. I was already a graduate of English and Journalism before studying public affairs and administration. Would I seek employment as a news reporter based on my passion and lifelong ambition, or seek a job as a legislative assistant, administrative officer, or administrative manager?
Jimmy Cliff in Wonderful World, Beautiful People sings Time Will Tell. At six years old, the singer asks his father what he thinks about his future. And his father answered that he would start to understand when he becomes a man. I am in the same situation today.
My Background and the Future
President Lyndon Johnson says, "Ability is stretched or stunted by the family you live with, the neighborhood you live in, the school you go to, and the poverty or richness of your surroundings. And the product of a hundred of unseen forces playing upon the little infant, the child, and finally the man."
I am Abiodun Giwa, a naturalized American citizen originally from Nigeria. America's political system enthroned by founding fathers, maintained over the years, has ensured my education. Rutgers has added to my body of knowledge. My preparation for leadership is complete. I am ready to step out to impact humanity, and the community that has given much for my mental development. The climax of my arrival in the United States for a business conference in 2002, 15 years after the assassination of my late brother, Dele Giwa, a leading Journalist in Nigeria, where I also prepped to be a journalist.
My struggle for education began after a free elementary education due to poverty and the lack of the government's commitment to youth education. Arriving in the U.S. as an asylee changed my fortune. I began college at Mercy College in 2007. I graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in English, followed up with a stint at Hofstra University, and crowned my efforts with a master's degree in Journalism.
I worked as a security officer while attending college to maintain focus. I avoided seeking a Journalism job due to the old and new trend in the profession that gives media proprietors the right of control amid the ideological poisoning of the media operation. My state of mind led to a decision to study Public Affairs and Administration beginning in the Fall of 2018.
And here at Rutgers University, the HYPE BEAST, an online fashion magazine, finds me and engages me while treading towards graduating from the university. I dropped out of security work as a first step towards finding a job that matches my training. I am working as a Lead-Based Paint inspector helping to mitigate problems posed to children's safety, who unfortunately find themselves living in homes with lead.
Now, I am open to all possibilities. I want employers to note that I am free and open to working in any part of the country, either as a news reporter or public administrator. Notably, I have chosen to publish my portfolio in Global Pentorch, a website I founded and have maintained since my days at Hofstra University, unaware my first work as a reporter would emerge at Rutgers.
