CLinton and Le Pen: Two Women's Great Election Losses
May 8 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
Marine Le Pen has just lost an election in France, just like Hillary Clinton in the United States sometime ago, precisely less than 200 days ago. There was a great hope of clinton winning the election, just like Le Pen also raised hope, but was crushed by emmanuel Macron. The polls disappointed Clinton in U.S., while the polls were not just accurate in France about Macron's crushing of Le Pen, but Macron went a little further with a landslide against Le Pen.
Both Clinton and Le Pen are from well established political dynasties in their respective country, with Clinton as former secretary of state and wife of former popular President Bill Clinton, and a first lady of repute, while Le Pen is a daughter of Jean Marie-Le Pen, founder of the National Front Party. Marine ran on the platform of the party as presidential candidate in the just concluded election that she lost.
Clinton had the support of her husband, who also campaigned for her. Unlike Le Pen's father, who reportedly said that his daughter lacked the qualities to be a president, according to the Daily Mail newspaper. Despite the misstep of clinton for her use of a private email as secretary of state against the law, a development that led to a federal investigation against her, not many people thought she was unfit for office, because of her popularity and that of her family.
The man, Donald Trump, who defeated Clinton in U.S. election, was a rookie politician, just like Macron in France, is also a rookie. Do we call an example of the fight between David and Goliath, and David defeated Goliath? In political stature, both le pen and Clinton are like Goliath compared to Trump, a real estate developer turned politician and suddenly defeated a professional politician and Macron - a banker, with only two years experience as economic minster, but defeated the daughter of founder and leader of a political party from 1972 to 2015.
While women in France are not showing a great sense of loss, unlike women in the U.S. over Clinton's loss, there is acceptance by French people that voters sought a new face, and that that may have been Le Pen's political Waterloo and the cause of her great loss. Although, majority of people in the U.S. sought change, especially tired with Washington politicians', but yet there was a great sense of loss for the loss of Clinton, a washington insider and representative of the political establishment, against Trump who had vowed to shake up Washington.
It is not certain whether Clinton will be running again as a presidential candidate, because at 73 in 2020, she may not be strong for the ordeal of running around the country to canvass for votes. Some observers have actually explained that some of the reasons her campaign was less visible in some Blue states that she lost in the election was her inability to for the stress involved. It is remembered that twice, she had health issues, the one at the World Trade Center, where she reportedly fell and one of her shoes was seen taken by a police officer, pursuing Clinton's car to get the shoe to the owner.
Le Pen is still young at 48. People think she still has a chance of running again. One advise that people has for Le Pen is that she should seek reconciliation with her father and get his blessings, before the old man's last day on earth, to avoid the Jacob and Esau scenario, where a younger Jacob took the blessing away from Esau. Already, Jean Marie Le Pen has started blessing his grand daughter, who is just 28 years, and already an MP.
