Did Jammeh Fled or Departed Voluntarily
January 22 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
The news of of Yahya Jammeh's departure from Gambia on Saturday hit the news wave late on Saturday.
He was accompanied to the airport by few loyalists, who were seen waving hands and bid him bye and safe journey. He held out a copy of the Quran toward them as he looked back before entering the aircraft.
Jammeh's departure from the country he had ruled for 22 years followed a diplomatic agreement brokered by leaders, who spent days working to ensure that the West African country was not thrown into a state of warfare.
Following Jammeh's agreement to leave the country, because according to him, it is not worthy the shedding of blood of anyone to resolve the issue, which has made him to refuse to relinquish power.
According to development, it was not the appearance of Senegalese soldiers that forced Jammeh to agree to leave, but more pressure placed on him by negotiators, who probably talked to him about the need to avoid bloodshed in the country.
Therefore, it seems erroneous for some news reports to say Jammeh has fled from Gambia. There was no manifest military attack. The Senegalese or ECOWAS soldiers, who entered Gambia were ordered to halt their action.
Consequently, it was not a military action that compelled Jammeh to succumb to negotiators' wish, but a decision on his part to allow reason to prevail and get out of the difficult positing that he has placed himself or for which the struggle for power in the country has placed him.
In grammatical term, a fleeing person will not dress the way Jammeh dressed gorgeously in his traditional whites and and Quran in his hand, and supporters at hand to bid him bye and safe journey. A fleeing person will be seen running with no dress to impress and nothing in hand to disturb his or her movement to run to safety from manifest or faceless forces that may be pursuing him or her. A running person will not at that moment know the way to the airport and may probably run though a foot path across the border, unless a contingent available for him to take him through to the airport as often shown in james Bond's movies.
In contrary terms, it was Adama Barrow, who left the country hurriedly for the safety of his own life, and possibly to avoid shedding blood too. And it was why he was holed up somewhere in Senegal, where he was alter sworn to office, in the Gambia's embassy in the country. But he laughs best, he would laughs last is applicable to him. His nemesis has voluntarily departed the country. He may now choose a time to return home and assume presidential powers.
It is even possible that it is the Gambia's aircraft that has taken Jammeh out that will be used in bringing Barrow from Senegal into Gambia, unless he chooses to travel by road. For the Gambians, it is a victory against evil. As barrow has noted, those who have fled the country with fears of the unknown, during the political impasse, can now return.
