In France, You Still Cannot Veil
1 July 2014 By Abi Giwa
Veiling of face in public remains illegal in France, following the European Court of Human Rights ruling upholding a ban on wearing of the niqab in the country.
The court holds that the ban of niqab in France has not violated the freedom of religion and expression, against the claim of the plaintiff in the case.
The Plaintiff, a 24 years old French woman had challenged the law of 2010 that banned wearing of veil in public space concealing the face. The ban carries a fine of 150-euro.
According to the BBC, France is the first European country in modern day to ban veiling of the face in public.
