July 13 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Americans woke up on Monday to the news of shooting to death of a one year old boy in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday. The boy was reportedly shot in the stomach in front of a park during a family cookout. It is part of the rise in crime wave following the city's decision to defund the police, pushing up number of shootings in the city more than expectation.
There are reports showing the number of police retirement is in upward movement, while July 2020 police training for additional 1100 officers has been cancelled by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The New York Post reports as follows based on police information: The one year old was shot in the stomach during a cookout at a Brooklyn Park. The baby in addition to three men were shot around 11:35 p.m Sunday, in front of Raymond Bush Playground on Madison Street and Marcus Garvey Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
As many as three suspects reportedly drove up in a dark-colored SUV and parked in front the victims. They then hopped out of the vehicle and opened fire, according to the newspaper's source.
The baby was rushed to a hospital (Maimonides Medical Center) with expectation of survival, but died three hours later at 2:30 .a.m, according to the newspaper's sources. There is no news about the identity of the shooters, other than they came in an SUV, parked in front a park where the boy and others were relaxing in a cookout, a common phenomenon during hot summer weather.
Also in New York, a video has been trending of a suspect who has a police officer in a headlock and the suspect is hailed and cheered by spectators. Alexander Ocasio Cortez is reported of attaching crime wave in New York to unemployment and the desperate people needing to feed their children.
In another development earlier at the weekend, two police officers were reportedly killed in Texas. The officers were said to have been ambushed during a response to domestic violence complaint. The officers name were given Edelmiro, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39, of McAllen Police Department.
"Two of our finest officers were killed in the line of duty while working to protect residents in their community" siad Governor Gregg Abbott on Twitter. The killer of the officers were identified in news reports as Audon Ignacio Camarillo, 2. He reportedly killed himself after killing the officers.
