Nigeria: What does Ahmed Bola Tinubu want?
September 29 2015 By Abi Giwa
He is not a recluse going by the standard of human accomplishment. He is the national leader of Nigeria's ruling party, All Progressive Congress, APC. He was twice governor of Lagos State, the most cosmopolitan State in Nigeria. His wife, Remi, is a senator of the Federal Republic. And his daughter, at a relatively young age, is (Iyaloja), the leader of Nigerian Market Women Association. She succeeded Tinubu's mother, who died a little while ago.
Many Nigerians credit Bola Tinubu for the emergence of a new ruling party, and so his political wizardry is highly praised, as having what it takes to weld together, different political group, to form the APC, which defeated the former ruling party in a presidential election, about six months ago.
Aside from crediting Bola Tinubu for the victory of the opposition party, observers say that Bola Tinubu is stupendously wealthy and that he is one of the wealthiest living Nigerians. But people also talk about the secrecy surrounding the sources of his wealth.
One major problem said that stood between Bola Tinubu and political victory before the recent APC's victory was his undemocratic method of nominating people to fill political positions. Twice, Bola Tinubu's party failed at clinching power, until his party extended hands of fellowship to other members of the opposition and the recent victory at the polls. However, his party controlled a sizable part, west of the country. In fact, one major problem the APC faced at the initial stage was how to curtail Bola Tinubu's selection of candidates for political office. But the party nonetheless went through the storm of acrimonies the matter caused.
Notwithstanding their knowledge of Bola Tinubu's political ascendancy, curious Nigerians ask about what else does Bola Tinubu want, because they believe that he has transcended the level of economical and social needs, and that whatever he is now seeking must fall in the level of human want and one they is not necessary mortgaging the soul. The statement arises over the current political impasse between the ruling party and the country's National Assembly, following manifestation of differences among party members, on how to go about the election of the National Assembly officers.
Bola. Tinubu and other party chieftain wanted the party to decide who among the ruling party senators should be nominated as senate president. But some othe said they favored a democratic approach and that no chieftain should arrogate to himself the right to say who they the senators would choose to be senate president..these members went ahead and followed the democratic approach and elected a member of the ruling party, Bukola Saraki as the senate president . The APC frowned against Saraki emergence as senate president. The party wanted a member it will name to be senate president.
the rancorous development has led to an In- fight within the ruling party, where people Bola Tinubu said he would never recognize Saraki as senate president. Tinubu's wife, Remi, refused to shake Saraki's hand at the inauguration of senators. The party said it would do everything in its power to get the rid of Saraki. Last week, Saraki woke up and realized that he had been slammed with 13 charges of corruption arising from a wrongful declaration of assets, when he was governor about 12 years ago. He was arraigned in an Abuja court after a week long of effort by Saraki to evade arraignment, because he said his travail was the handiwork of his political enemies, who did not like his emergence as senate president in a democratic manner, and that these enemies wanted to him out at all cost.
Many Nigerians, mime and abroad, have pointed accusing fingers at Bola Tinubu as the power behind Saraki's travail, because according to these observers, Tinubu want to play the godfather's role. And the question many Nigerians have asked is what does Bola Tinubu want that hasn't and for which reason he is subjecting the Nigerian system to an avoidable political crisis.
Bola Tinubu hasn't deny the accusation that he is behind Saraki's travail, but he has asked the senate president to resign for what he termed moral reason, because of the ongoing trial of the senate president at the CCT. His newspaper's journalists have unleashed writings, citing numerous cases from civilized countries, where leaders resigned once faced with moral issues. But these journalists haven't a single case of the existence of godfather politics, the type that people say that Bola Tinubu is forcing on gullible members of his party., or any of the civilized countries where government organs like the judiciary is used for political vendetta.
