Nigeria's carelessness about time
1 August 2019 By Abiodun Karim Giwa
The Nigerian government is careless about time and the role that time plays in the affairs of men.
Government in Nigeria is not behaving like people who have fallen behind in life'achievement and needs to work fast to catch up with time.
Imagine a country that cannot supply enough electricity to supply power for industrial needs operating for five months without a minister for power and without ministers in all the essential areas of the country's existence.
President Muhammad Buhari was reportedly reelected in March 2019, according to the Nigeria's Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, but the reelected leader just about a week ago presented names of ministerial nominees to the National Assembly for consideration. Awfully, none of the ministerial nominees has been heard talking about the need to get to work to catch up with the loss of time five months out of the four years the reelected leader will serve before retirement.
The sluggish manner of doing things seems like a government culture in Nigeria and the outcome being the nation's economic backwardness attended by high corruption and the rush to catch up by Nigerians caught in the quagmire of poor governance. The reason many Nigerians are found in all parts of the world in search of alternative places for survival.
Nigerians are known to be highly industrious in virtually all parts of the world,,while their government at home presents a different picture. Many Nigerians abroad say that Nigeria's problem is beyond corruption, and that Nigeria's present crop of leaders are either unfit for office or are playing to the lazy type of governance unfit for a country bursting with active population, and lacking the ability to create the enabling environment for Nigerians.
Consequently, not many Nigerians have hope that any turn around for good from the present set up in Abuja. The type of optimism one will expect from a government's performance to benefit the people or lead to a people oriented revolution in the way things are done like minding the role that time plays in human affairs and that time is equivalent money and that if lost may be difficult to regain are absent..
