Tackling homelessness around the world
February 12, 2021 By Abiodun Giwa
20 homeless people have reportedly died in Germany this year following the deadliest winter in years, according to a news report by the DW. There are also reports about the death of the homeless in other places. The report also shows how Berlin's Hofbrauhaus has been helping the homeless, the impact of homelessness during the pandemic, and the protection of the homeless in Delhi from the pangs of the cold weather.
What is Hofbrauhaus? It is a beer hall where free food is served to the homeless with free accommodation. That is the good news. The bad news is that the number of homeless in Germany in on the rise, amid information about a woman who gave birth in a freezing temperature, and that the homeless people run the risk of infection in a shelter or freezing temperature outside.
Life has become dangerous for the homeless who has to choose between two evils: the shelter or the pang of cold. The story by the DW shows that homelessness is worldwide and not an issue for any particular country, and that whether the homeless live in the shelter or the in the cold, they face the danger of the Covid-19 infection.
According to the report, about 115 million people are homeless around the world. Managing homeless is one struggle that governments contend with to ensure social distancing in public places. The homeless are housed in hotels in some cities in the United States and the bill paid by the government. It is what is called covid-19 pandemic measure, and it means after the pandemic the homeless may be allowed to go back to the street, because the good deed of free food and accommodation as being done in Germany and free hotel accommodation in the U.S. will not be forever.
When you read the news about homelessness and the victims of homelessness, one wonders why governments all over the world cannot come together and take an action against homelessness by investigation the remoter cause of homelessness and what can be done to tame the Augean Stable.
Many people are saying that if governments can compete with God over the climate change, why shouldn't the same governments do something about eradicating homelessness. There is a report by the KHN that the homeless are dying in high number in Los Angeles. And the INSP reports that are literally thousands of people dying of homeless on the streets of America. The Guardian has also reported that has a horrific homelessness crisis.
