Theresa May - Britain's de facto Prime Minister becomes real Prime Minister
July 11 2016 By Abiodun Giwa
Theresa May will become Britain's second female prime minister on Wednesday, after Cameron may have tendered his resignation, news reports on developments from Britain have shown.
This has happened after Andrea Leadsom, May's opponent in the race for the No 10 Downing Street, suddenly announces the end of her campaign and she endorses May.
The story of May's rise shows that her rise to the seat of prime minister is one from de facto prime minister to the real prime minister, based on her influence in the parliament and the number of years she has been home secretary.
The first foray into May's record by this website happened few months ago, following the immigration policy said to have been put together for migrants to earn certain amount of income to be able to remain in Britain.
It has been glaringly clear that May was the favorite of the two contenders. May is an establishment candidate being a civil servant to the core, while Leadsom represents the outsider as a banker. The only difference between the two, which seems to have given Leadsom a sort of edge has been her campaign in favor of Brexit, unlike May who has campaigned for Remain. However, despite having campaigned for Remain, May had changed her course to support Brexit as soon as the opportunity to step into the prime minister's shoes opened.
May is on record as the longests serving home secretary in Britain. An extract from an earlier story on her is a follows: "May's biography shows that she is an appointee of David Cameron, first as home secretary, and women and equality in 2010. But in 2012, May rescinded the women and equality portfolio, but held to the home secretary portfolio. And her first major idea as home secretary after she has abandoned to play a role on women and equality is the non-EU immigrants' earning threshold."
As the oldest serving home secretary in the history of Britain in 100 years, and who has been retained in office by Cameron, curious observers don't rule out the possibility that Leadsom's decision to drop out of the prime minister's race may have been caused by hard game of diplomacy by the establishment people in favor of May. Just few days ago, Leadsom was caught in an argument with the Times of London over a statement she made to a Times' reporter that she was a better candidate than May as a mother and in comparison to May. May has no children.
Although, Leadsom denied the statement, which the Times' reporter re-confirmed and wondered why Leadsom denied her own words, Leadsom still blasted the Times' for misrepresentation of her words. It is thus a shock that Leadsom has chosen to drop out a day later after her argument over her motherhood experience and May's lack of motherhood experience.
May's prevalence over Leadsom shows that motherhood experience may afterall not be needed to be a prime minister. And May has been showing her hawkishness as a seasoned politician, who has time for no other than the people's work, and that her
desire is to do the will of the people by saying continuously that Brexit is Brexit and determination to do everything to get Britain out of the EU and that she will not allow politics to stand on her way.
