United States in endless gridlock
January 24 2019 By Abiodun Karim Giwa
The media has not stopped counting the number of days of the partial shutdown of government business at the federal level.
Along counting of endless days of the gridlock are analysis of the impact of the shutdown on workers and their families, and other businesses patronized by affected workers.
There is also warnings of the dire consequences from the shutdown if it continues without resolution,
prompting questions about where parties to the gridlock currently stand and the hope for a way forward.
News reports say that there are two dueling bill, one by the Republicans and the other by the Democrats, to come before the senate for consideration. But there is little or no hope that either will break the gridlock running to 40 days. The Republican Party bill is reportedly based on some of the compromises by President Donald Trump.and it incorporates funding for the border wall. While the Democratic Party bill is said to be without the funding for the border wall, meaning the party remains rigid in its position.
The Republican party bill is said to need 60 votes to pass the senate. But the Republican Party does not have the 60 votes, unless some of the Democratic party senators abandoned their party's position to embrace reason and bipartisanship required to move the country forward. On the other hand, the Democratic Party's bill may not be considered for voting by he senate because the president will veto any bill passed without funding for border wall. And if considered for voting and it passes, it stands to be vetoed by the president.
One reasonable argument was advanced by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It is a request for the government to re-open and allow deliberation on border security. But she has cancelled the possibility of re-opening the government to allow deliberation on border security with her stance not to fund the border wall at all and her description of the border wall as immoral. How then can she asks for the government to re-open and allow for deliberation on border security without assurance for the funding of border wall?
It is possible that if Pelosi gives an undertaking that there will be funding for the border wall after government reopens for deliberation, the shutdown will end. That is how powerful Pelosi as the speaker of the house. But with Pelosi's statement against funding for the border wall, cancelling the State of the Union address and has stopped all negotiations with the White House brings the statement of Martin Luther King Jr. to resonate against her position.
Pelosi is not running. She is not walking either and neither is she crawling. She is not moving forward or backward. She seems to love to be stranded. And America is stranded with her. Thus the bucks for the responsibility of the federal workers suffering due to the shutdown has moved from the president's desk to Pelosi's desk.
Pelosi has to shift ground for the nation to move forward, and unless the president decides on another way around Pelosi. Newt Gingrich has said that the president has to be strong to win against Pelosi, because according to him Pelosi is a politician to the core, one with seeming absolute power without flexibility.
