Was America once great and not great again?
August 1 2016 By Abiodun Giwa
Do you still think in term of whether the best candidate wins elections or that the most powerful financially and well connected to the establishment do?
People say that the best candidate hardly wins the election if he or she is not well connected to money bags and the establishment, and that only in rare cases after the truth has almost been banished, that the electorate gears up in search of the best candidate, to stop further erosion of social and economic situation.
This brings us to the current debate in the United States about whether it is right or wrong to say 'Making America Great Again', Donald Trump's campaign slogan, is a good political catch word that reflects the truth or that America is already great, and that there is no need of making the country great again.
We all agree that America is a great country and that it is the country's greatness that has been pulling many migrants from all around the world to come into the country for opportunities lacking in their countries of birth. But when we remember that it is not only America that immigrants are pulled to enter in search of the greener pasture and that many immigrants are only lucky to be in America, just as many are lucky to be in Canada, Britain, Germany, Austria, and a host of other European countries, it will be understandable that the greatness of a country is not what pulls immigrants, but the need for sustenance and survival, not available in their countries.
Many people believe that America is a great country, but that the country's greatness has been adversely affected by the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. My first confirmation of this truth was about 15 years ago, when I first arrived in the U.S.
My host, then a dollar taxi driver, lived in Carnasie part of Brooklyn, told me that America was no longer what it used to be before the attack on the World Trade Center and that as a taxi driver, his own dwindled income was a sign of the changing times. Of, course, I could not compare my home country, Nigeria, to America. I told my host that whatever the current situation in America, I prefered to remain and struggle and see what becomes of my future.
A whole lot of immigrants like me may have taken the same decision like me, to struggle through to have something that looks like a breakthrough in our hands. But the truth remains that hard work and uncertainty about tomorrow still reign. I know certain people who have worked so hard and believe having made enough money, returning to their countries becomes a better choice, to avoid working themselves to death.
Of course, a whole building like the World Trade Center could not have been destroyed with so many businesses without effect on the nation's economy. Was not it the objective of the attackers to reduce American's greatness and influence in the world? If the attackers have not achieved their aim wholesale, observers believe that the attackers had managed to effect a distraction in America from continuing social and economic development stride at home to fighting useless war. And considering the amount of money that has gone into fighting terrorism in search of terror leaders around the world. This brings us to the political speeches about the wars, the cost of the wars and the money that the country is said to owe China.
One of President Barack Obama's campaign statements was to end the war in Iraq and all other wars and bring back the resources for development in the country, because the people at home needs attention against using their hard earned income tax to fighting wars abroad that have left the home almost without necessary attention.
Obama did not use 'Making America Great Again', but it can be deduced it is what he stands for in 2008, against continued filtering away Americans' hard earned money on Iraq. He planned to turn attention to social and economic development in America. America needed attention. Aside from iraq, many americans do wonder how America's presence has become so manifest around the world and how the country plays the role of Father Xmas around the world.
I have lived in the country for 15 years and I can tell you that to survive in America that I have lived for 15 years, you must work extremely hard. With debts hanging on your neck to be paid for the education you have received. And you definitely know that you have to continue working at the level you have been working through out the remaining of your life to be able to pay up your education loan along with the payment of other bills. America is not a socialist country, where a politician will promise forgiving your education loan for you to believe it, amid the country's mammoth financial debt to China and the number of years it will take to repay the debt.
Virtually everyone here believes that just like individual debt counseling has become a big time business to help individuals who have run into big time debt out of debt, the same way that the country needs debt solution to get out of its mammoth debt to China. It is believed that you cannot be in such a mammoth debt as an individual or as a country and say you are great. Many Americans are worried that at the end of the day, it is their children who would have to face the repayment of this debt.
When you are in debt, debt counselors tell you to see what you can do to reduce your expenditure in ratio to your income, by plugging all areas of expenditure that will help you to balance your account and be credit worthy again. The same is applicable to countries. Meanwhile, it is good to believe that with the attack on the World trade Center, the losses from the attack, the struggle to recover from the loses, the vast amount spent around the world fighting terrorism without seeming victory in sight, coupled with the big daddy's posture abroad, when attention is needed at home, the greatness of the country may have been adversely affected and that it is time to make America great again by helping it out of the indebtedness and ensuring all the neglects arising from long time attention to issues abroad are addressed. .
You cannot tell me that you will forgive my education loan for me to believe you, because someone would have to repay the debt unless I die.But the government can help reduce my burden by ensuring that wages also rise with the rise in the cost of living, that rent is not going higher and higher more than the increase in wages and that corporations don't charge me more than they should for services, by ensuring that as the world capital of capitalism, there is competition in services to help reduce incidences of monopoly and do away with high cost of services.
But majority of Americans seem to be saying that politicians will promise heaven and earth, but that the moment they settle down in office in Washington, they forget about you the ordinary guys. They leave you to the mercy of corporations, landlords and employers, whose profit motive is beyond rendering humanitarian service.
