Welcoming Another Year
1 January 2022 By Abiodun Giwa
Another year has rolled in. There were celebrations amid a shout of Happy New Year. The declaration of a happy new year began even before the midnight of the transition into another year. Curious observers asked whether there were new developments.
But when you look around, you find that nothing new has happened. There is nothing that suggests a state of happiness. Instead, people are still unhappy over the mass of death worldwide arising from the Covid-19 paralysis.
A few days ago, about 1700 people died in the United States alone. The news of the dreadful virus is all over on the internet in every country. There is also the issue of policy confusion in the world's number one democratic country-the United States. The world is still struggling with a virus not showing slowing down amid leaders' inability. People are unhappy. They don't know the direction their leaders are taking them. Homelessness is increasing. People visibly slept in the cold on pavements in street corners as people shouted 'Happy New Year' last night.
The cost of oil at the gas station leading to commodity's high prices and a toll on the people began before 2022. The high prices are still with us. The human struggle amid Covid-19 damages is still here. The sad phenomenon of lack of transparency and accountability among leaders at the world and national level remains a worry. No leader has been held accountable for Covid-19's outbreak, despite knowing the evil emanated from Wuhan. The argument over its emergence is inconclusive. Some argue it is from a meat market, and others say it is from a laboratory. But all agree it is from Wuhan.
Holding no one accountable for this evil means encouraging another evil outbreak capable of threatening humanity in the future. The truth has become an alien culture at the United Nations since after Haile Selassie's home truth to the world body. Falsehood now rules the world and the nations of the world. There are democratic countries, socialist and communist countries, and primarily clueless leaders.
The consequence is mass poverty in many countries, and the urge to migrate to more prosperous countries to escape from their leaders created unhappiness. Nothing has changed. The world has merely transformed into another year. The illegal crossing of desperate immigrants at the U.S. southern border is continuing. The government is careless about its outcome and effect on the public interest.
The only reason for people's happiness at the end of one year and welcoming a new year is being alive despite all the problems around them and having a chance to continue the struggle.
