Winnie Mandela stature and the Mandela's standard
9 April 2018 By Abiodun Giwa

If Nelson Mandela still lives in our minds and he seemingly has not died, despite his transformation to mortality and burial, how then can one think or say that Winnie Mandela has died? Yes, the news said that Winnie had transformed to mortality, but did that mean the end of her?
Certainly not. Nelson Mandela left this shore on a last journey some years ago, and he is still remembered for his good works and service to humanity. Nelson Mandela’s standard is currently used in South Africa and outside the country to judge the level of service by his successors and others, among whom none has measured up to Mandela's standard.
A look at Winnie Mandela's’s life history as rendered by historians is hardly different from that of Nelson Mandela - as a fighter and protector of the rights of her compatriots. And people are saying that like Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela has left her name in the sand of time.
The sand of time is imperishable. Names left on the sand of time also don’t perish. The names will remain in the mind of the people for as long there are people who remember the service by people whose names are on the sand. And people have not stopped saying it is what informs the saying that a good name is better than gold.
Without a resounding good name for her role as a wife to Nelson Mandela and someone who continued the fight against apartheid after Nelson Mandela was jailed, how would Winnie Mandela's passage at 81 be published all over the newspapers and shown on televisions screens around the world?
Nelson Mandela fought apartheid. Winnie Mandela also fought the evil and prevailed. The evil of apartheid did not get rid of them at their prime age against their will, and and against the will of their supporters and family. Nothing can be as sweet as leaving this deadly world close to 100 years, after the struggle against inhumanity and unjust system.
One thing the world has not seen or heard about the death of Nelson and Winnie Mandela is how doctors may have struggled to keep Nelson and Winnie alive in the hospital before their eventual disengagement from the world. Nelson was hospitalized for a considerable length of time and so was Winnie, according to news reports.
Those doctors who had the opportunity of treating these icons at their calls towards the end must have fought hard to not want them to go. How would anyone who knew Nelson and Winnie want them to leave? Just like Nelson, Winnie will live in the mind of South Africans and others around the world, who know the sterling quality of her service to humanity.
Winnie did not disappoint the world in the fight against apartheid, while Mandela was in jail. She kept the torch fiercely burning. Many observers still believe that had anything untoward happened to Mandela in apartheid's custody, Winnie could have set the entire South Africa on fire.
She proved in her words and acts as having possessed the capability, and that she was a good example of what a man can do, a woman can also do. Undoubtedly, South Africans may never stop talking about Winnie Mandela and her fighting spirit.
