13 people died in an apartment fire in Philadelphia in the United States on Wednesday, and seven among them were children.
News reports show that the smoke detector in the building was out of operation, making it difficult for people in the building to hear the fire alarm, and unsuspecting of danger when the fire began.
Philadelphia Housing Authority President Kelvin Jeremiah said in a statement the property was last inspected in May and that smoke detectors were operating properly at that time." Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Otherwise, he said, “it is too early for us to say more,” adding “This unimaginable loss of life has shaken all of us at PHA.”
The apartment building is located in a public housing in unit. Philadelphia fire department officers arrived at the scene at 6:40 am. "PFD responded to a fatal fire this morning on the 800 block of N. 23rd St, and found heavy fire coming from the second floor of a three-story rowhouse. It took 50 minutes to place the fire under control," reports said.
Although the fire was brought under control at 8:54 am when the fire department sent its report in a tweet, but the scene is still active. The rowhouse is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, PHA.
"This is without doubt one of the worst most tragic days in our city's history" Philadelphia's Mayor Jim Kenney said in an Inquirer's report on Wednesday.
