Freedom after more than two years in jail
4 January 2022 By Abiodun Giwa

An Egyptian activist, Ramy Shaath, regained freedom from an Egyptian jail today after more than two years in the slammer for allegedly waving a Palestinian flag at the Tahir Square.
Who is Ramy Shaath? The question occurred on January 4, 2022, after reading the information that there was a piece of unconfirmed information about June or July 2021 that he would soon regain freedom from jail of Egyptian authorities.
The information about his travail emerged on January 4, 2022 during a research online and consequently the decision to investigate if he had indeed regained his freedom. Shaath's freedom came on January 4, and the information was published by MEMO, six months when words first emerged about the possibility of his release.
What crime did he commit that warranted his detention by Egyptian authorities? The MEMO's report answers the question.
According to the MEMO, Shaath is an Egypt-Palestinian activist, a former consultant to the late Yasser Arafat, and a co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. He is also the son of former acting Palestinian prime minister Nabil Shaath. He had a running battle with Egyptian authorities over his bid to renew his Egyptian passport. But sources said he is a Palestinian and not an Egyptian. However, he allegedly assisted a terror group. He was a part of Alliance of Hope - a political group in the making that had a plan to partake in the elections.
Authorities allegedly added him to a terror list alongside other political prisoners, including a former member of parliament Zyad Elelaimy, and banned him from traveling and froze his assets. A United Nations panel of experts called for the delisting of Ramy and Zyad from the list. And it criticized the development as an attempt to "attack individuals engaged in human rights work. Shaath's wife, Celine Lubrun-Shaath, was deported back to her home country of France. Judicial and security forces have said Ramy will be deported to France after he is released," the MEMO reported.
A further investigation by Global Pentorch shows that the real problem Egyptian Authorities descended on Shaath was his waving of the Palestinian flag at the Tahir Square. As a result, Shaath spent more than two years in jail after arresting without a search or arrest warrant.
