Nigeria: Mudslide kills four children from same family

“I was in the parlor when I heard a loud noise. My four children just died like that. God, what is my offence? What did I do wrong? Four children in one day?! I am supposed to die in their place. I must have sinned. I don’t even know what I am still doing alive.” These are the words of officer Odia of the Nigeria Police, following the loss of his four children in a mudslide inside his home on Saturday night in Lagos, as reported by The Punch newspapers.
According to news reports monitored in Nigeria, Odia said that as he was preparing for work in the morning - his usual time of getting ready for work - he heard a loud sound, and when he checked the children's room, a manhole from caused by a mudslide had swallowed the children. The Lagos State Government has said there were efforts in the past to mark some houses for demolition in the area, but workers were prevented by residents, and said that most of the houses in the area are illegal structures.
