Joseph Biden: Much Ado About Presidential Running Mate
August 11 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Joe Biden announced his vice presidential running mate on Tuesday. She is Senator Kamala Harris from California. The pick ended the much awaited information from Biden's campaign that had made newshounds kept vigil around Biden's home in Delaware for a week. The vigil has ended. It is time to look forward to November 3 elections.
The media polls has Biden leading Trump with 6 point nationally, a drop from about 12-15 points about two months ago. Meaning that the Trump campaign has succeeded at reducing the two digits lead and hopefully the poll will become tighter as time goes on.
Harris is historically first African-American woman to be named a presidential running mate. Harris emergence did not come as a surprise to curious political observers. About a week and half ago, Biden wrote her name on to-do-list that was not hidden from reporters. Only the campaign the campaign could explain why it had taken another a week and a half to make the announcement, and kept the media waiting.
Biden again confirmed this about three days ago while biking near his house and the a Fox News reporter who kept vigil asked him as he biked past him whether he had made a choice for his vp. Biden answered Yes. And the reporter asked aho he pick was. Biden quipped "You". Later that day, the campaign said Biden only joked and that an announcement will come when the decision may have been made.
Many observers are saying that the delay in the announcement may have been caused by disagreement to arrive at a consensus. Biden had said he would pick a black female as a running mate. And just about three days ago, news reports said that Governor Gretchen Whitmer was sighted visiting Delaware previous weekend, raising a possibility that Whitmer may have become a possibility for Biden as a running mate. And what happened to Karen Bass consideration recommended by the Bernie Sanders group?
Leading to questions about what may have been happening within the campaign and whether Biden has changed his mind about picking a black woman as a running mate. Question about the possibility of Biden changing his mind came amid uproar about Biden's comparison of .the black community with the Latino community in term of diverseness. And at the same time, some black leaders wrote and signed a letter telling Biden to pick a black woman or forget about getting elected.
The wording of the letter is something that raises a question about how abnormally people view each other racially. Can the eventual choice of a female black running mate correct Biden's bad impression about the black community? What will picking a black female bring to the table when blacks are already in cahoot giving a good lead in the polls?
