Abortion as anathema
April 3 2016 By Abiodun Giwa
Everyone is against murder because it is a crime punishable under the law and condemned by major religions. We all agree that abortion, the act of killing an unborn child, is an act of murder. Yet, there are people who earn their livelihood by carrying out abortion to save lives, because there are women who want abortion, to avoid having a child they don't need for one reason or another.
There are people who supports abortion and there are people who are against abortion. One question that many people are trying to answer is why would any woman want an abortion and why should anyone try to stop anyone willing to have an abortion?
The latest question about abortion arises over a recent debate about abortion in the news media following Donald Trumps' reported statement that women who commit abortion should have some form of punishment. But despite the resonating statement and the anathema that abortion is in the society and the need to discuss it, reports say that the Republican Party's front runner quickly distances himself from his own words about women, abortion and the need for some of punishment for women who commit abortion illegal abortion, but that still has not stopped Trump's bashing by the media.
The media thinks that by seeking to ask for punishment for women is one atrocity that Trump has committed, and that abortion as an issue has only served as a vehicle to show that the presidential candidate want punishment for women and as such women would not want him to be president. Are women who commit atrocities not being punished like their men counterpart by sentencing to jail? Will it be a new thing to ask that women be punished if found to be doing anything wrong?
Is abortion wrong and should women be punished for committing abortion? If we all have agreed that abortion is equals to murder, why should anyone who commits abortion or who helps others to commit abortion not be punished? Has abortion become an acceptable way of life and are women free to be pregnant and free to remove the baby in the womb just for any reason? These questions are important, because since we live in the days that divorce is less than $300 and a divorce can be procured and granted without a spouse's appearance in a court of law, it may as well be that anyone can do abortion and be free from questions.
What is the difference between a woman who kills a new born child and hides the remain in a garbage can as recently reported in the news, and a woman who aborts a child from the womb? The woman who commits an abortion removes what she does not want from her stomach and the woman who kills a child removes what she does not want from her life. However, there has been established argument that killing a fetus amounts to killing an unborn child and that the woman who terminates a child from the womb is not better than the woman who kills a child after birth.
Therefore, going by established arguments on abortion and murder, both women can be said to have committed murder as we see people carrying placards near offices of Planned Parenthood Federation say these people are murderers. But one woman goes away unquestioned and the other is made to face the legal challenges for disposing off her child. Should not a woman who does not want a baby through unwanted pregnancy the opportunity to abstain from unprotected sexual interactions? Kimberly Brown, a New York resident says that there are women who make mistakes and she therefore approves abortion for the sake of protecting women from having children whom they don't want or when they are not ready.
Brown's argument recalls the position of pro-abortion liberal politicians, who believe that the woman owns her body and she should be able to decide what is good for her. On the other hand, the conservative politician believes that abortion should only be allowed in a case of pregnancy that threatens the baby and the mother's lives or threatens the life of either of the two. The conservative politician has added one more commandment to a line in the "Ten Commandments" that says "Thou shall not kill." By this, the conservative politician is saying one can kill in self defense, as it is often said by gun advocates that owning a gun is for self defense. So abortion is for self defense.
But Val Abrams, a former Nursing student at the of Pennsylvania says he is conservative and s Christian and does not believe in abortion for any reason. He shares the ethos of many millions of Christians, who are against abortion for the sake of fulfilling the religion ethos. Haran Lewis, though a Christian says he is against abortion, because he is against the loss of life. Verdayne Remekie, a Paralegal student at the City University of New York, argues in support of abortion, if the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.
Despite all the political liberalism and the strive for freedom, there are guiding abortions in the United States, the restrictions and otherwise, is based state by state. Abortion Laws in some states in the U.S. are very restrictive, but otherwise in some other states. The focus of some of the abortion laws are to save the woman's life, by holding the doctor's responsible in case of a woman's death during abortion and by ensuring no doctor carries an abortion on a woman whose pregnancy is over certain months. The onus of ensuring that the woman who has asked for abortion does not die is on the doctor and the woman is free from liability. Of course, a woman who dies from abortion has lost everything and she is not alive to answer any question.
People believe that many women around the world where there is no legal abortion die all the time from quack abortions and that the lack of legal abortion can be responsible for quack abortion resulting in avoidable deaths. And for this reason, many people approve legal abortion, just as many people are against it. In discussions about why any woman would want an abortion, it is said most young women who are still in school fall in the category of people who seek abortion, because they cannot afford the embarrassment of unexpected pregnancy at school and before their parents at home.
Responses show that the problem is that many people still love to have unprotected sex, despite the campaign and the need for protected sex that is louder than ever. Another question borders on why a woman would wait until 20 months of pregnancy before seeking to terminate the load, since the load can as well be rid off before its first week or month. For example, some interview respondents said that a woman can get rid of any load from a rape case, instead of allowing it to develop into an unwanted load difficult to remove and capable of endangering her life.
Finally, the society needs more of sex education with emphasis on the woman to get rid of anything she does not want early, before it develops into a product needing termination. And it seems that nobody seems to want to terminate anything, including the doctors, who are forced into the act of saving lives in a liberal manner. But it is believed that lack of punishment for women who have taken committing abortion as a regular attitude enriches legal abortionists, because there is no law apart from punishment for self-abortion acts, restraining the woman from the act and that with dollars in hand, it is believed that doctors can become tempted to do anything.
One man confesses that his baby mother has saved him form the burden of unwanted children with five abortions! When the women or the society say that the woman is not alone and should not be singled out for punishment in a case of abortion, this man and his baby mother confirm the need to hold identifiable couples, who have conspired to commit more than necessary abortions accountable.
