America and the image problem
29 November 2014 By Abi Giwa
The view people around the world have of America is that of heaven in a hell. and that is the world is a hell, but that in that same hell, there is a heaven and America is that heaven. But Americans know that America is no heaven and that the country is not in any way close to the picture of heaven painted in the book Of Revelations in the Christian Holy scripture. But America has one thing going for it and it is that the founding fathers have built a strong foundation to make life more amenable to Americans compared to other parts of the world and that too has something to do with the American heritage and its fight for independence from Britain.
What the founding fathers left undone and left to time, other presidents and civil rights leaders have helped to push toward perfection. But the fact is that no human society is perfect and the same is applicable to America and it is what makes America less than the scriptural heaven. This is what plays out in one's head observing the police and community relations in the country; frequent killings of unarmed black children by white police officers and making one to ask how America cannot put an end to this that is giving it an image worse than other societies Americans try to show how to live. Everyday the gun issue is forever there, and the police is also fighting to ensure they don't go out and not return to their wives and children.
The fire in Ferguson has not been fully extinguished over the killing of unarmed teenager, another black male has been shot down on a dark staircase by a police officer with upholstered gun in his hand and a touch light searching under a stair case. The protest in New York created its own confusion as people are not aware whether the prelates in the city is over the recent killing in New York or over that of the killing in Ferguson. It is also shocking coming after an experience of a police working to repair its relationship with the community over stop and search method it recently jettisoned because of accusation that the method was target to a particular segment of the population.
The founding fathers ensured freedom, but not freedom to be lawless. Access to good education for citizens to know their rights and avoid lawlessness is available for those willing to acquire it to avoid situations that will bring them into a cross with the law. But like in every society that is far from being heavenly, America has its own share of vagrants. The nation aware of the fact that no matter what it dies toward achieving Utopia, there is a need to put in place what human and technology have enhanced to achieve law and order. So, there are cameras everywhere and nothing that anyone does can be hidden. It is why criminals are easily apprehended, unlike a society that has not invested in that area toward achieving a lawful society.
