Andrew Cuomo and death in nursing homes
February 16 2021 By Abiodun Giwa
. "At the direction of Governor Andrew Cuomo, on April 23, Office of the Attorney general, OAG, set up a hotline to receive complaints relating to communications by nursing homes with family members prohibited from in-person visits to nursing homes and formally initiated a large-scale investigation of nursing homes’ responses to the pandemic," Letitia James said in her report into death in New York Nursing Homes. Part of the report is now haunting Governor Cuomo.
"Among those findings were that a larger number of nursing home residents died from COVID-19 than the New York State Department of Health’s (DOH) published nursing home data reflected and may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent, the report says. A week or so after brouhaha between the Conservative media and supporters of Governor Cuomo over the state attorney's report, Cuomo's chief of staff added more fuel to the fire currently pursuing Cuomo instead of dousing the fire!
“We froze” data on Covid-19 deaths among long-term care facility residents out of fear the true numbers would “be used against us” by President Donald Trump and federal prosecutors, according to sources who participated in the call. The statement here is based on a report by the CNN and the new York Post reports published by Syracuse.com. On Monday, the New York Times published a news report that says Cuomo Accepts some blame in Nursing Home scandal but denies cover up. The report says that Cuomo admitted a delay and that he caused pain!
What Cuomo has said is that he caused a deal and pain but not death. This against his accusers allegation against that he had caused the death of people sent into nursing homes on his order without precaution or safeguard against getting infected in the nursing homes. The issue of cover has arisen and without the cover up allegation the governor would not be defending himself against allegation of a cover up. Let us rewind back to his chief of staff's statement.
"We froze data on Covid-19 deaths among long term care facility residents out of fear the true number numbers would be used against us." The chief-of-staff's statement is clear on the issue of cover-up. Why they froze the data is another issue which according to her was the fear of exposure and the fact that President Donald Trump and federal investigators could use the true numbers against the Governor Cuomo. Now, the liberal news media are reporting Cuomo's words, while the Conservative media is reporting the words of people whose relatives died in the nursing homes and are seeking Cuomo's resignation or a federal investigation.
The attorney general of new York State is a Democrat. Cuomo's aide who has said that the data were frozen is also a Democrat. The attorney general has published the truth of her office investigation into 20 nursing homes. The chief of staff to Cuomo has spoken about the frozen of data to deflect continued questions and criticism on Cuomo's handling of the Covid-19 crisis, and probably to douse the continued crisis coming from the crisis. But the crisis has refused to be doused. This is certainly not a case requiring the governor's joint appearance on the CNN to be resolve or an EMMY award for a show. This is requiring leader accountability.
Cuomo's statement in the New York Times' report denying a cover up may only have helped to inflame the crisis, because people know the similarity freezing and cover up, and the current position of the governor denying cover up is far from helping matters. And may be the governor just need to offer an apology for his mistake of directing patients from the hospital to homes without a safeguard, and to accept a cover up instead working feverishly to cover up with unnecessary excuses.
