Breathing Purple 2013
A group of new paintings and works on paper by Stefan Kürten will be
presented at Art Basel Miami Beach.
Stefan
Kürten’s works deal almost exclusively with houses, albeit not with
identifiable houses, but rather with archetypes of specific structures.
Simultaneously generic and intimately familiar, Kürten’s unpeopled
architecture evokes both tranquility and unease. The clean lines of mid-century
design stand out among the structures sited in urban, suburban, and rural
areas. These new paintings meld interior and exterior spaces, actuality
and reflection.

Fabricated
from painted aluminum, wood, and fabric, Rita McBride’s
Mechanisms
are each accompanied by a case that provides storage,
protection, and a display system. When installed, the cases are
covered by
wood-grain patterned slipcases, atop which the Mechanisms
sit.

With
an eye trained on modernistic objects and architecture, McBride’s
sculptures toy
with the functionalism and formalism of public structures.
While parsing these
relationships, McBride has been continually seduced by
new materials, employing
those that have a relationship to both
mass-produced goods and a modernist
sensibility.
