Bad Omen For Kenyatta's Re-election Campaign?
May 2 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
One of the senators leading Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election campaign has lost the nomination for re-election in his own senatorial district.
According to Kenyan Daily Nation, the senator, Senate Deputy President Kembi Gitura, was beaten to the ticket by Kiharu MP Irungu Kanga'ta. Consequently, Gitura has begun a battle for political survival.
The first sign of trouble for President Kenyatta in Gitura's loss of nomination, is Gitura's decision dump Kenyatta's party and fight against Kangat'a for political survival in the election scheduled for August.
The news reveals that Gitura has resolved to abandon President kenyatta's party due to failure by the party to join join or identify with his for a new nomination against Kingat'a, because he is said to believe that Kingat'a might have rigged the nomination against him.
But Kingat'a rejected the accusation that he rigged the nomination against deputy senate president. He said that he does not have the means to ferry people to the nomination for votes, but that voters have favored him based on his record as an MP and gave him the opportunity to represent them as their senator.
One Kenyan interviewed by the Daily Nation said that the deputy senate president's loss to Kingat'a is a betrayal of President Kenyatta, because deputy senate president is seen as the president's right hand man.
The defeat of the deputy president coming in the week of the announcement Raila Odinga as presidential candidate for the National Super Alliance, NASA, may be a signal of what the alliance portrays for Kenyatta's political future and a wind of change blowing over Kenya political firmament.
In another development, President Kenyatta is said to have been panicky over stiff resistance against those he has selected as members of reelection campaign team in their respective constituencies. Kenya Weekly Citizen reported that Kenyatta was concerned that most of the figures he had picked to lead his re-election campaign in the 47 counties are facing stiff resistance from their political opponents, a move that would likely deny him votes.
Many observers believe that the battle for the soul of Kenya, between Kenyatta and the NASA, seems to have begun ahead of the August election. Kenyatta's face off with five different political organizations in a formidable alliance, has made his reelection battle a curious one to follow, as the battle unfolds.
