Biden Grades Trump on Covid-19 Crisis
June 30 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Joe Biden said on Tuesday at a press briefing in Delaware that President Donald Trump's handling of the Covid-19 crisis has failed. When asked if he has tested for the virus, he said he has not tested. Though, he believes in testing and contact-tracing as best ways to help Americans through the Covid-19 crisis period.
In his first remark about what he would advise President Trump do to get hold of the Covid-19 crisis, he gives a recast of all the ways that are already known as given by the Covid-19 Task Force Committee such as washing hands, social distancing, using the mask, and invoking the Defense Production Act for the production of PPE.
He said he will ask Dr. Fauci to come onboard his administration as soon as he is elected in a manner approving Dr. Fauci and science, but he later came up with a statement that debunked that position when he said "Until our science catches up to reality", meaning the science is not performing as he would want it.
Secondly, he faulted President Trump's response to the news of allegation of Russians placing bounties on American troops by saying that President Trump's statement that he has not been briefed by the intelligence community is dereliction of duty. One reporter asked specifically whether the issue represents a violation of the oath of office by Trump. And Biden became critical of the president despite the Pentagon's statement before his briefing that said there was no corroborating evidence to support media report on the matter.
Thirdly, Biden answered a question on the destruction of statues across the country by protesters and his view is mildly deviated from Trump, saying he would advise elected officers to ask confederate statues to be put away in museum while those supporters of the revolution be protected by the government. Trump does not support destruction of public property for any reason.
One area where Biden nearly derailed was a reference he made to his late son in which he struggled to make the connection by first saying "Joe", and then said "I am sorry, I mean Jill my wife", and then said "I am sorry" and later said that he was making a reference to his late son. Asked about his cognitive ability given his age, he said he can hardly wait to compare his cognitive ability to that of the man he is running against.
Some Trump supporters who watched Biden's press briefing on the television were quick to say there was nothing new in all that Biden said as his advise to Trump in tackling Covid-19. They say washing hands, using mask and social distance are not new and that all Americans knew how Trump invoked the Defense Production Act that led to mass production of face mask and ventilators. Though, critics had said Trump did not immediately invoke the Defense Production Act.
It was also recollected by observers that Biden was one of the top Americans who faulted Trump's early ban on the flights from China. The press briefing was Biden's first in about 89 days. The first time he has stepped out of his basement in recent time to talk to the media. It is unknown when he will hold another briefing. He said his doctors had advised him not to hold rallies.
