China Ready For War Over South China Sea
May 22 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
President Rodrigo Duterte could not believe what he heard from President Xi Jinping during a discussion about the claim of ownership over the South China sea. What did he hear from Xinping?
That if Philippine presses its claim to the South China Sea, there will be war.
'We are friends. We do not want to quarrel with you. We want to maintain the present warm relationship. But if you force the issue, we all go to war," Duterte revealed in a speech he delivered at the national Convention of the Philippine Coast and and published in a news report by RT News.
Xinping words to Duterte followed Duterte's statement that the South China Sea belongs to Philippine with insistence and that Philippine will drill oil there.
The report said that Duterte continued with the claim for the right of ownership over the South China Sea, despite what he heard from xinping, recalling the July 2016 Hague arbitration ruling, which said China's claim to the South China Sea lacked strength and favored philippine instead.
Duterte said that Xinping said that China's claim to the South China Sea is historical, and that China has not ruled out parleying over the hague arbitration in future, if both China and Philippine remain friends, but that such parleying cannot be no, because, Vietnam, like Philippine is also claiming that area.
Duterte is reportedly saying that if it is solely about him, he will not hesitate going to war. However, he is humbled by China's military power, which he said will turn the encounter into massacre capable of destroying everything. Duterte, unlike leaders, who lack knowledge and love for their won people, and will go to war with countries more powerful than their own country, despite the danger it entails for their country and people, has demonstrated rare caution, in his handling of the encounter with Xinping over the South Chine Sea.
China is the power in that hemisphere. Just last week, there was a news report in the BBC about two Chinese Sukhoi Su-30 jets have conducted an "unprofessional" intercept of a US aircraft, the US military said. There is a South China Sea and there is also the East China Sea. The encounter between the U.S. Aircraft and China's two Sukhoi Su--30 jets happened over the East China Sea.
Air Force spokesman Lt Col Lori Hodge said the intercept by the two Chinese jets, which took place over the East China Sea, was deemed unprofessional "due to the manoeuvres by the Chinese pilot, as well as the speeds and proximity of the Chinese aircrafts.
It was said that the encounter between the U.S. aircraft and the Chines jets was being discussed with China though appropriate channels with anticipation of a military investigation. Although China has reportedly not commented on the development, but it has in the past accused the U.S. for reconnaissance flights over Chinese coastal waters, and regularly calls on the US to reduce patrols in the area.
Just as the photographs above shows, Xinping's China and duterte's Philippine are friends. However, the issue of the South China Sea is capable of turning that friendship into enmity. China iks against every country laying claim to the seas around China. As reported, China is already telling the U.S. to be cautious about its reconnaissance flights over the waters.
And with the North Korea hanging between the U.S. and China, the U.S. will overlook the South China Sea to get China's cooperation to humble Kim jong-un. And the reason Duterte has to be extra diplomatic with China in claiming ownership over the South China Sea.
