Christie, Bridge Closure and the Press
5 February 2014 By Abiodun Giwa
Has the run for the 2016 White House really begun? The question has been prompted by peoples' observation that the run for the White House and Chris Christie's as a potential candidate is responsible for the clamor by a section of the press for accountability over George Washington Bridge’s closure, which they believe has turned into a political hemlock to a once promising political figure.
Christie had said he knew nothing about the bridge closure said to have been targeted as retaliation against a Democratic mayoral candidate, who had refused to endorse the governor for a second term in office.
Many people have doubted Christie’s assertion. But doubting Christie’s assertion does not mean a prove against his denials and a right for those doubting him. It is to avoid doubts and get to the root of the matter that investigations are being conducted by state and federal agencies. None of the agencies investigating the bridge closure or the Sandy Storm Fund have submitted their report.
A section of the press has joined the people in exercising the right to talk like the people without restriction to their reporting job or separating reporting from opinion as enjoined by the reportorial training. It is true that the press as a watchdog has to hold the elective office holders responsible to the electorate, but based on the truth and verification without emotion.
Some members of the public are saying that a section of the press has gone after Christie in their reports because this section of the press is liberal and Christie belongs to the Republican Party. According to them, the liberal newspapers are working to puncture Christie’s candidature and electability to favor their own anointed candidate. One of the reports that have caused their grouse is over a letter written by a lawyer to a former Christie’s associate, saying that the former Christie’s associate has evidence that Christie knows about the George Washington’s bridge closure.
They say that even though the lawyer and his client have not produced their so called evidence, the section of the press has gone ahead to report Christie as a liar and another has reported emphatically that Christie knows about the closure. Curiously, the letter the press relies upon emanated from a dislocated politician whose lawyer is fighting to be paid for the legal service he rendered to equally dislocated Christie's associate.
Concerned members of the public ask whether Christie is the first politician to lie if indeed he has lied. They ask whether there haven’t been other liberal politicians who have lied and these newspapers have not labeled them as liars. They ask that If these newspapers have not labeled other politicians who they claimed have lied on policy issues, why are they labeling Christie that investigators have not disclosed results of their investigations about the bridge closure? They are saying without mincing words that it is difficult for them to trust the politicians, but they expect the press they rely upon for information not to be like the politicians.
They said the in 2008, Hillary Clinton was the candidate anointed by the liberal media, but when Hillary was trounced by Barack Obama in the primaries, they turned and filed behind Obama. They say that the same section of the press is still behind Obama, while at the same time creating a gate to block any potential candidate to favor their anointed candidate.
All effort to explain to them that the liberal press did not create the George Washington bridge closure fell on deaf ears. They believe that the 2016 run for the White House has begun.
