Death of Two Comedians and Long Life
August 21 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
God gives and God takes. He gives at a time he pleases and takes at the time he desires. Some die young and some die at good old age. No one wants to die young but people still do. When we hear about people dying at good old age, we almost want to be like them.
Since past weekend and the death of two great comedians, first was Dick Gregory and followed by Jerry Lewis, almost everyone want to be a comedian. Gregory died at 89 and Lewis died at 91. And the of them were super stars!
What is the secret behind their longevity? One may never know the whole truth, other than that they made people happy as comedians, and they too may have been happy in return. It is much about the adage that says that what one gives to others is what one will get in return.
And that if you want to be happy, you first of all needs to give joy to others. The passage of these great men may have a way to teach us about what to do to live long. Be happy. And make others happy too. there is a prove here that to deliberately go out of one's way to make others happy can also make the architect of happiness happy.
They were not just architects of happiness. They were professional comedians. They live by creation of comedy, deliberately tailored to make people happy, pointing out the society's shortcomings, leaders' dancing and happy with being sad and giving sadness!
Wikipedia says that in a modern sense, comedy (from the Greek: κωμῳδία, kōmōidía) refers to any discourse or work generally intended to be humorous or amusing by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, television, film, and stand-up comedy. They give laughter!
Lewis must have made whole lot of people laugh in his life time to earn the cover page of both the Daily News and New York Post on Monday. And he died on Sunday. Imagine the rush to change the cover decision at the last minute to accommodate the story of his death and life time in a cover by both papers.
