Fire devastation in the East Coast
11 January 2022 By Abiodun Giwa
On Monday, people were shocked hearing the news of a fire outbreak in the Bronx, New York, that claimed 18 lives, and eight were children. The information quickly reminded observers of the Philadelphia apartment fire that killed 13 people and seven children.
It meant that in one week, the East Coast lost about 30 lives to apartment fire devastation. The fire department in Philadelphia said the fire alarm in the building worked in May, the last it did its check-up.
Equally, casualties in the Bronx fire arose from smoke inhalation caused by an open fire door instead of closing for an unexplainable reason. "Investigation is focused on a door that should have closed automatically but did not," according to EYE WITNESS News abc7
Some victims of the Philadelphia and the Bronx apartment fire would be alive if the fire alarm in the building worked at the time of the fire and the fire door functioned in the Bronx building.
Observers are seeking a need for all fire alarms in apartment buildings to work and for fire doors to be functioning mode to save lives. Apartment occupants also need to be aware of the need to get out anytime the fire alarm goes off and not believe that because there have been times fire alarm goes off without fire and have to hold up in their apartments.
These fire incidences early in the year send a warning signal and the need for safety in high-rise buildings. People believe that the fire departments' diligence saves lives. However, fire alarms and fire doors all need to be in functioning mode.
What use is a fire door that remains open at the onset of a fire outbreak? What story does a fire alarm that refuses to work spread about the society's care for human lives? Are these situations not making work more difficult for men and women of the fire department who respond to information about fire outbreaks?
People also need to be aware of their need to vacate the building when a fire alarm goes off. But more need be done, like a man talking to members of his house on Monday about the need for them to learn to get out quick anytime the fire alarm goes off because the notice is not for decoration or demonstration but to alert people to the danger.
