Friendship With The World
June 3 2017 By Abiodun Giwa

The furore over the Paris climate accord and agreement, following President Donald Trump's decision against the agreement, is still reeling.
Although, he spoke about possibility of renegotiation, but the world's foreclosure of renegotiation has made the impasse more troubling.
The development is showing that the change ushered in the United States with the election of President Trump is proving to be beyond cosmetics.
It is affecting not just politics in the U.S. but all over the world. Angela Merkel has never seen this type of change before, and she has told her European Union counterparts to be ready to forgo the normal to embrace what she considers as the abnormal.
Her words have hardly dried off printed newspapers, when the words came from the U.S. that President Trump had pulled the rug off the climate agreement. The agreement made in Paris, the home of the world's most popular revolution, has itself been swept off the ground by another revolution from the U.S., though not many people at home and abroad think that event in the U.S is itself a revolution. Though world leaders were aghast, but not that they were unaware of the message as being part of the political campaign promises that swept Trump into office.
From the perspective of events from the moment Trump assumed office as president and commander in chief, it seems that his motto is to stand alone, a reminder of a cliche among early born again Christians that friendship with the world is enmity unto God. Although, Trump has not said, he wants to stand alone, but that he will only do things that will benefit his country or put his country at advantage or not disadvantage his country.
In the case of his torpedoing the paris climate accord and agreement, he said that the U.S. has been disadvantaged by provisions of the agreement and accord in favor of China and India, two major competitor to the U.S. He said he would consider a renegotiation of the agreement, probably seeking a level playing ground among the countries involved in the agreement and accord.
The reaction of the world to Trump's demand for a renegotiation of the agreement and accord is one of shock, just as Trump's decision to take the U.S. out of the agreement. Silent observers say that if Trump's decision is seen as over reaching, the same is the world's decision to close to door against renegotiation.
Unlike Fela Anikulapo Kuti's song, "No Agreement," Trump has not said that to hell with accord agreement and that he hates friendship with the world. All he has said is that the U.S. will not go with the letters of the agreement as currently written and that he does not rule out renegotiation. Why cannot the world say, come on, show us what you don't agree with in the agreement and let's see if there areas that amendments can be made. When has engagement among nations become enmity to humanity?
Emmanuel Macron of France said that the Paris agreement will make the planet great again. But he has forgotten that though the planet is one, but that there are many countries in the planet and leaders of these countries are silently jostling for advantage to make their individual countries great again. And Trump has said that gone are the days, when the U.S carries the world's burden or the country is tied down for others to catch up with it.
