Fulfilling Marriage Vows
24 March 2014 By Abi Giwa
Two men and a young woman are traveling together on a train. One of the men is advanced in age. The woman looks at the young man searchingly and asks what the elderly man considers a weird question about the marital status of the younger man's parents' marriage. She does not think it is funny to ask such a question without any related issue in discussion.
"Are your parents still married," she asked the young man. "They have divorced," he answered and followed with a silence. The three travelers eye each other.
"Why did you ask the question about whether his parents were still married? The elderly man asked the woman.
"My parents have divorced and I want to know whether divorce has become the characteristic feature of marriage?
The man shakes his head with outrage. The woman looks like she has said the unexpected she will need to defend.
"Are you married?" She asked the elderly man.
"Yes, I am married," he responded.
"How many children do you have," she continued.
"I have eight children."
"But the eight are not from different women," she suggested.
"What makes you to think so. I have only one wife and has been married only once in my life. My only wife is the mother of all our children."
The young man whom the woman has questioned about his parents' marital status has turned into a spectator, shaking his head with amusement, smiling momentarily and his eyes on the elderly man.
The woman is manifestly appalled that there is a man with such a large number of children from one woman and on marriage. "I want to be married and remain married. I am happy to see there is a man who has remained faithful to his marriage vows." She seeks to know how the man has managed to remain faithful to his wife.
"When I got into the marriage, I made it a point of duty I was in it to remain it. Marriage isn't a bed of roses. The moment one decides to make it work, seek the cooperation of the other party, it will work. Despite the widespread news of divorces, there are many people who are still happily married, because it what they have sought from the beginning of their relationship. I don't mean the celebrities type of sham marriages that are glorified on the pages of newspapers, but not existent in the mind of couples involved. Even as we are talking there are celebrities who still have their heads on their shoulders and have happy marriages."
The woman shakes her head and says she will give everything it requires to make her marriage a success the moment she finds the right man. The young man smiles and does not say anything.
