Have Trump's Enemies Got Him?
19 July 2023 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
What was Socrates' offense in Greece that made his political adversaries try him and give him the poison? He taught the youth philosophy on the street to enable them to grasp the political situation in their country. He did not commit any crime other than teaching the youth. Is the same scenario not currently playing out in the United States? Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton and her star power in 2016, and all trouble let loose on him. One similarity between Socrates and Trump is making the people know the ruling elites' deficiencies.
There are two differences between Socrates and Trump: One was a philosopher of repute, and the other was a businessman before venturing into politics. Socrates did not show interest in elective office. And that did prevent his adversaries, who were career politicians, from treating like him anyone who opens them to the ridicule of defeat and exposing their lack of popularity, since fame is their stock in trade.
Mrs. Clinton thought she was the next president. But she was shocked, and so was her power base. They could not believe what happened to them. Consequently, they invented Russian collusion. Attempts upon attempts to impeach the president. Some even refused to acknowledge him as president. He became a subject of unimaginable lies to tar. Believing he lived in a free country, he decided to compete for the presidency again, hoping he could still make America great again. He had a miserable four years in office tied to the Russian collusion.
The result of efforts for a return marred by utter changes to election practices. The novel mail-in ballots caused by Covid-19, causing election results to be allowed beyond the election day traumatic to his re-emergence. But he and many of his supporters still believed the election was not free and fair, causing some of them to embark on the attack on Capitol, which turned into an instrument his adversaries were using to stop and put him away. They want him to die in jail, unlike Socrates, who got the poison and not the benefit of staying alive for any reason.
What use would life be to 76 years old whose adversaries plan to incarcerate him for 100 years? Is that not as good as giving him the Socrates treatment? And here they are with unimaginable crimes they have committed and are not charging and indicting themselves because they have and control the apparatus of power. Some observers still don't believe the power against Trump is succeeding in their plan to put him away, while some think they have the plan hatched and only the grace of God would save Trump.
The American Democracy has turned from the love of transparency, equality before the law, and fair competition, to a Machiavellian practice - dangerous scheming and the survival of the fittest. Trump is not the real victim when instead of paying attention to managing a country, elected leaders choose to masquerade as loving but are the opposite.
People who can declare war against four years old for whatever reason, what can they not do to demonstrate hate? Yet, their voice against hate is more strident than any other. America has arrived at a juncture when we remember Clarisse's disappearance in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. What was her crime? Because she lived in a society where being a pedestrian was a crime, held a strong view different from others. They talk about insurrection. Was what the country witnessed in the burn-down protests that paralyzed the country not worse than insurrection? What makes one violent protest to be different from another?
Is it because one affects the people up there, and the other affects people the in the basement? The people down can face challenges. But the people up are not. Does that suggest a sense of equality?
