The news of the arrest of Raymond Igbalode Abass, aka Hushpuppi, and Olalekan jacob Ponle, aka Woodberry, with $40.9 million recovered from their home has continued to raise eyebrows, about the alleged fraudsters, and their lifestyle as a movie-like story that is difficult to believe.
People are asking about the amount reportedly recovered from Hushpuppi's home. is true and what the do with tht huge amount of money in the house..
And when you answer the question, another question follows whether the guys were operating a bank or bureau-de-change? And when you say you cannot say, another question follows whether the two guys don't know what it means to keep such a whopping amount of money under their mattress?
Aside from the hard cash recovered from Hushpuppi's home, what Nigerians have been saying about the Dubai's police arrest, the guys' hubristic lifestyle and the seeming oblivion lack of reality that the law will eventually catch up with them is astounding.
One Nigerians' statement in a comment to one of the news stories on the arrest is instructive. "What many Nigerians are unaware is another opportunity for Hushpuppi to be relevant to the FBI and the CIA on how he conducts his operations from his arrest and extradition to the United States." Relevance? Is the way a criminal operates ever relevant to law enforcement whose job is to get to the root of a crime and make the criminal answerable to the crime?
This is where majority of Nigerians reactions upstage few reactions that tend to excuse the two alleged fraudsters' crime obvious crime money laundering. Aside from laundering, they will have to answer questions about how the money find itself into Hushpuppi's home. Is the money in connection with about a million names in their computer's hardware as their as likely victims of their crime?
Many videos are trending online about Hushpuppi and Woodberry and their friends, about likes and dislikes for them, and about others like them who are still free and ability to harm innocent people. Many Nigerians are saying the lifestyle of the two guys with names that sound from nowhere does not portray Nigerians in anyway. They are types are also within Nigeria and the Nigerian governments, pillaging Nigeria, leading to discomfort for law abiding Nigerians.
Many Nigerians may be talking against the lack of transparency and commitment by successive Nigerian governments to the comfort of Nigerians, it does not mean Nigerians approve the life of crime. It portrays only the lifestyle of Nigerians who have chosen the life of crime for themselves in disgrace of themselves, their friends, families and unfortunately, their country.
There is no way Hushpuppi and Woodberry's original names are mentioned that their Nigerian names and country of origin would not surface against the 'names from nowhere' that they parade as belonging to them. This is where it affects Nigeria and Nigerians. This is why Nigeria must begin to punish crimes in high places to stem intentions to commit crimes by unknown names and believing they all never be caught.
