Israel's Unflinching Support to End the Destroyer
Saturday, 14 October 2023 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
One hardly hears about the type of Hamas's recent sudden attack against Israel. People talk about intelligence failure in Israel and other powerful countries and that only monsters can execute the sort of destruction against Israel. It reminds us of the story of Beowulf, where the beasts were merciless and - devoid of humanness. They took away sleep from the Danish leader. The beast, Grendel, became topical among Danes and worldwide. An end to the beast's life became compelling for the Danes.
Can Benjamin Netanyahu sleep now? Are Israelites not seeking an end to Hamas' beastly-like existence? What has Hamas gained with its act of destruction? An invitation for Israel to seek its destruction. The storyline of the struggle between Israel and Hamas has all the characteristics of the battle between the Danes and the beasts: killing and kidnappings, making the Dane vow an end to Grendel and her son.
Netanyahu has begun the unexpected - a plan to finish the devil killing his people. And the world stands with him, reminding observers of some lines in Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Waters, "When you're weary, feeling small, when tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all, I'm on your side, Oh, when times get rough, and friends just can't be found. But Israel has many friends more than they wish for.
Hamas burnt whatever goodwill it had before its latest foray into trouble. How can any friend identify with the attack from Hamas against Israel? After killing thousands, including innocent children, Hamas asks Muslims worldwide to protest against Israel. Why did not they protest before wreaking havoc and destruction is beyond observers. They have caused a war that Israel has not asked for. And Netanyahu has vowed the destruction to Hamas which the organization represents in relationship to Israel. What happened to Israel is beyond description in words. But Mathew Arnold seems to have captured it in the Dover Beach.
He writes, "The sea is calm tonight." And the sea was calm last weekend when Hamas suddenly unleashed its evil. "Gleam and light are gone. You hear the grating roar of pebbles and bring the eternal note of sadness in. Sophocles heard it in the Aegean. It got to his mind the turbid ebb and flow of human misery. And the world, which seems to lie before us like a land of dreams, so various, so beautiful, so new, hath neither joy, nor light, nor certitude, nor love, nor help for pain; and we are here like as on darkling plain swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight..."
Arnold ends his poem with, "Where ignorant armies clash by night." People say Hamas' army seemingly belongs to the world of ignorance, judging by its last act. And now it has placed the entire Gaza region in confusion and uncertainty. The Israeli military is on the march to wipe out its ignorant enemy. Gaza's innocent residents are in utter danger. They have a request to leave or get destroyed by war. They never thought this would be happening to them as last Saturday. They woke up and learned of Hamas's beastly undertaking, jeopardizing their lives.
Hamas has given Israel worldwide support to destroy the Grendel in its environment. The same way that Beowulf ended the beasts that troubled the Danes. But people worry about intelligence failure in Israel and Western countries, enabling Hama's horrendous destruction without detection. Should Netanyahu not be blamed for Israel's non-detection?Israel's intelligent failure makes people live in fear that such can happen in their countries.
