Jolie, War and Rape
10 June 2014 By Abi Giwa
Angelina Jolie has said there is a need to end sexual violence at a conference in London agitating for exclusion of rape in a war. But observers say that there is something wrong in the conference theme about ending rape in war zones, instead of seeking to eliminate war itself.
They say it is a good idea to be highlighted that women are victims of avoidable rape in war situations, but that working to stop rape in war is like pursuing elusive goals.
"We must send a message across the world that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of sexual violence - the shame is on the aggressor," Joile said.
Observers say war itself is evil and ruinous to humanity; and that rape is an illegal act, which soldiers who lack discipline and other lawless people commit under the envelope of lawlessness that pervades a war zone. They argue that the only way you can stop rape in a war zone is to punish the rapist when caught or work toward elimination of war.
And just as if working to help civilians to get away from the cross fire in a war zone is a good idea, Ukraine's president, Petro Poroshenko, has sought to create a humanitarian corridor to allow civilians escape from the areas affected by war east of the country.
Some people say that talking to eliminate rape in a war is like working to stop killing in a war. They say that a victim of rape in a war who escapes getting killed still has her life compared to those who are more unfortunate to have been killed.
According to the BBC, Angelina Jolie addressed more than 300 international government ministers at a Global Summit to end sexual violence. The summit is taking place over three days at the ExCel centre in London and aims to look at how to eliminate sexual violence in war zones.
