Migrants' Dilemma: From Texas to New York City
6 August 2023 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
"Have you heard the news, news, news?" Jimmy Cliff sang in one of his songs. And he continued, "I was in Africa, touring Nigeria. They want to put me in jail. They are scandalizing my name. They want to make me look shame, shame, shame, because I got me good fame, fame, fame." Today's events fit perfectly in Cliff's "The News." Donald Trump has good fame, but his adversaries are working to shame. However, Trump is not the subject here, but Gregg Abbot, the Texas hardworking governor.
Why is Abbot not running for president? He is busy fending off asylum seekers coming through the Rio Grande into the United States. His efforts to protect the State of Texas from illegal immigration have placed his name on the global stage. He is undoubtedly one of the most hardworking and famous governors in the U.S. He recently discovered a means to further cut down on the number of people coming from Mexico using a floating barrier of bright orange, placing ball-sized buoys on the Rio Grande.
Before the current barrier in water, Texas had built a wall reminiscent of Trump's administration to stop illegal immigration. The State has also been busy sending busloads of migrants to New York City and Washington for advocates of free migration as the state governor pivoting several strategies to defend the State has been called all sorts of names by adversaries who view him as unrelenting in his determination to protect Texans. He has sent close to 95,000 migrants as guests to Mayor Eric Adams, who has, in turn, been calling on Washington to send money not forthcoming.
No one sees Adam's inability to provide for migrants coming to New York as Abbots' cause but Washington. People say if Abbot had allowed those migrants to remain in Texas, it would be part of the problem the State would face. Why cannot Washington give timely assistance to migrants who it has maintained an open door to travel into the country? P The Federal Government is tired of pointing accusing fingers at Abbot and allowing the Mexican government to make the latest accusation since the new tech in the Rio Grande is not from the Feds but from Texas. The Mexicans have come accusing Abbot of the cause of death in the Rio Grande.
President Andres Manuel Obrador said it is inhumane to treat a person like this, referring to two bodies found in the river after the new Texas' installed barriers. However, CBS News Austin reported, "Preliminary information suggests this individual drowned upstream from the marine barrier and floated into the buoys," Director Steve McCraw said. He added personnel are posted at the marine barrier at all times in case migrants try to cross." Another official, Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber, said, "Personnel told him the body was first seen near International Bridge 1 in Eagle Pass and floated to the buoy barrier."
The Justice Department, people wonder if one still exists in the United States, has filed a suit against Texas, saying the barriers are environmental and humanitarian concerns. But the DOJ failed to do its work when the number of people dying in the Rio Grande was higher. "As was reported in early July before the Marine barriers' installation, four people drowned trying to cross, an official said." Further, the United Nations had reportedly declared the U.S-Mexico border the deadliest land crossing in the world. And people ask what efforts Mexico and the United States have made to warn migrants of the danger of crossing the border, especially the Rio Grande River.
Abbot often said Uncle Sam had abandoned its responsibilities, compelling him to do everything humanly and technically possible to protect and defend Texans. The humanitarian disaster that should have occurred in Texas is happening in New York because Washington is not working. Does Biden expect Adams to use the unavailable city's fund to tend to migrants he has allowed into the country with open arms?
