Moore of Alabama's Struggle Against Accusers
November 16 2017 By Abiodun Giwa
Who is Roy Moore? He is a politician from Alabama in the United States, and he is running for a senatorial seat in his state of Alabama, on the Republican Party's platform.
Before he began running for office, Moore had untainted credentials. But just as fame got larger, another credential was forced on him, that he sexually assaulted young girls in his thirties, about forty years ago!
Moore has rejected the new credential. And he has pressed ahead in his campaign for the election rather than drop out as expected by his political opponents .And there is nothing yet to prove the truth or otherwise of the damaging credential that Moore had sexually assaulted under age girls in his thirties.
A lawyer and a retired judge. And over the years, running to 40 years, while he worked as a judge and retired from the bench, his accusers kept their distance. Perhaps they approved that a tainted man could work as a judge, but not as a senator.
Now that the man is running for a senatorial seat, the women are coming out like water that has been let loose under the bridge, accusing Moore of having sexually assaulted them, when they were young and he was in his thirties. Some observers ask why don't Moore's accusers think it is right to allow voters to judge him?
The story line goes like this. Moore loved to have young women, when he was in his thirties. What were the age of the young women? Latest story line is showing 18 and 24. But is there anything morally and legally wrong for a man in his thirties to go out with 18 and 24 years old women? Before an answer will come, the story line changes to forcible kissing and an unconfirmed ban from a mall, for being dangerous around girls!
But Moore's political opponents are doing everything they could to derail his political aspiration. Moore's opponents believe it is a fair game for them to pull him down before the election, rather than allow voters to decide his fate. Some observers say that Moore's enemies have got him. Others say the man should be allowed to have voters decide his fate.
Before his accusers came to light, Moore was certain of winning the senatorial election in his state of Alabama, but now the race has become tight, the New York Times reported. However, it is still being peddled that Moore could still win, but only that it is no longer so certain as it would have been without the sexual assault accusation.
One engineer speaking in anonymity said that he believes that the race has become bad for Moore, because his enemies said he loved to bang young girls. The engineer said that there is no way of confirming the truth of the allegation and the rumor that these women may have been sponsored politically to destroy Moore.
People are talking as should be the case in a free country. They are saying everyone is free to talk or accuse anyone of anything under the sun. But is it permissible for them to talk and accuse and the same time become the judge in their own case?
Moore's tribulation, as the engineer said, is already bad for Moore. But his opponents are not done yet. They want to ensure that Moore looses the election before the votes, forcing a question whether this is still a democracy. Some people are saying that any effort to force Moore out of the race and not allow voters decide his fate, will give democracy a new meaning.
Right now, Moore's sin seems to be not one of loving to date or forcibly kissing young girls, but one of having chosen to run for political office.
