New York Schools to Reopen
August 8 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York State said schools in the state can reopen for planning purposes and that the decision can be revisited if the virus goes beyond one percent threshold or there is a reason to for concern.
The governor said further that the decision whether schools reopening will be virtual or fece-face to various school districts to make.
News of the development was received with mixed feelings among New Yorkers who have to decide to allow their children to return or not return to school after months of clampdown caused by Covid-19, and the state fight against high casualties and having to be epicenter of the country's in the struggle before the latest relief.
The concern for safety remains at the top of parents decision to allow their children to or not return to school. A New York Post report shows that of 322,572 families filed an online preference form with the Department of Education, 212,940 requested 100 percent remote learning, almost two times the 109,362, who prefer blended learning.
About 200,000 families have the preference to keep their children home at the resumption of schools in September, careless about remote or combination of remote and in-person learning. Most parents are concerned about their children commuting to school through the mass transit.
The Post report also shows that parents of children in elementary schools express concern about a highly constrained environment where will be unable to interact or express emotion wearing masks. The decision to allow children return to school belongs to the parents and they are allowed to play a role determining what they want.
A look back at events in the state battered by Covid-19 that seemed was not going to have an end and the number of casualties as high as 32,831 is enough to make parents exercise enough carefulness in their decisions.
