Nigeria: Beginning of fierce political battle
September 21 2015 By Abi Giwa

Nigeria's embattled senate president, Bukola Saraki's fight against his adversaries conspiracies to bring him down, may have dimmed.
He has said in a statement that he will appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja, on Tuesday, following the failure of his motion at the appeal court to stop the CCT.
The Nigerian media has reported President Muhammed Buhari said he has no hands in Saraki's travail, but observers believe the opposite is the case. Every Nigerian know that since Saraki became the senate president against his party's wish, there had been hate between him and the nation's president, and there had been talks about the hawks in his party working to bring him down.
The government's initial problem was going after Toyin Saraki, the senate president's wife over alleged money allegation accusation, perhaps believing it has enough information of impropriety to drag the senate president's family in the mud. But when the senate president and his allies in the senate went after Ibrahim Lamorde, the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes, EFCC, with their own probe, the Federal Government officials were confused with indignation. The man they sought his life was still breathing, and capable of vengeance, instead of pacifying them.
Therefore, the decision to finally shoot him down the senate president himself. Meanwhile, no one has heard anything again about the allegation concerning Toyin. The principal himself, the senate president has become the target, since he has not shown to be repentant to give his adversaries in his party the free hand to fill positions in the senate.
Saraki may not be an angel, nor is any of those in the presidency who have conspired against him. You cannot go against a man's wife today, suddenly turns back midway, leaves the wife and turns to the husband, like people who have lost their senses irredeemably, without people raising eyebrows.
What is their problem and who is their problem? Is the senate president's wife their problem or the senate president himself? Or have they themselves become problems and cannot sense that they are under public's klieg light and that their open demonstration of insanity is being decoded by curious observers?
Does an angels seek to destroy others, while they claim to be an angels, but acting like the devil incarnate, whose job is destroying others? Or have the angels currently occupying Nigeria's Aso Rock forgotten the saying that those who work to destroy others have destruction waiting for them at the door of their sentinel?
Why don't people learn from history? You came earlier in 1983 claiming to be the cleaner. You packed a whole lot of people into the cell and even forgot your initial aim of righting the wrong to provide for the deprived Nigerians. Those who took part in the coup that put you in office saw the confusion you created and removed you with ignominy.
You now have a second chance, but you still haven't known that fulfilling promises is different from arbitrarily imposing the job of a Sheriff upon yourself and telling Nigerians that unless you clean the stable, get money back from those you alleged are thieves, there is no way you can deliver on your promises.
Did Nigerians forced you on making your promises and now turning around telling them you have some other jobs to do, apart from fulfilling your election promises, as if they came and begged you to come and rule over them?
There is no doubt that you have carved out what have chosen to do as your intention - to fight corruption. Good and you may have your way against your perceived enemies who have skeletons in their cupboards. You may succeed in rubbishing your senate president in the public eyes and even remove him from office, but remember that a dagger once drawn is believably not returnable to the shield and you may be tempted to turn against other enemies.
It is why your enemies too will be prepared for the worst. If you succeed in removing Saraki, will you also succeed in removing his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu? Of course, if he has feet of clay, you surely will succeed, just like you will do against Saraki, using the fight against corruption as a smokescreen and the CCT as your dagger, if the allegations piled against him are genuine.
Already, reports say the senators are already meeting across party lines to respond to what they regard as an onslaught and vendetta against the senate president. It is the beginning of a political battle, which no one can predict its end. Curious observers are worried that the time that should be used to attend to the welfare of Nigerians would now be used for useless political battle by politicians over office and booty sharing.
