Nigeria's Freedom Fighters and Tribunal's Ruling
7th September 2023 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
Wednesday, the election tribunal judgment in Abuja, Nigeria, ruled on the results of the last presidential election, reminding observers of heroes and heroines and Fela Anikulapo Kuti as a critic of Nigerian leaders' failure. In one of the soldiers' attacks on his residence, his mother suffered irreparable damage, and the star made a song out of the problem. "They kill my Mama, they kill my Mama, my political mama." His mother was one of those who fought for the country's independence. However, the country gained independence from colonialism, but the people were not, as new leaders after the political freedom assumed the colonialists' role, worse than predators. They care only for themselves and not the people. And it has caused a continuous emergence of freedom fighters when no need exists.
The army assumed the role for a long time and later presented one of its own - Olusegun Obasanjo - to run as a politician for a new future when it lost its past and did not know what to do again. Obasanjo was military head of state when Fela's mother encountered the danger in her son's home in freedom fighters' hands. They played God, canceled the past, and created a new future. But they failed. Nigeria is worse today than in 1999. Notwithstanding, Buhari emerged as another freedom fighter with a promise to kill corruption, tarring the outgoing People's Democratic Party as a corruption incubator.
Buhari was also a soldier turned politician. He became a military head of state as a freedom fighter and still fought corruption to be civilian president. But he failed against corruption as a head of state and president. He left no legacy for his party to stand upon to remain in power, making the ground slippery for his successor, Bola Tinubu. Those competing against Tinubu tried to create an image of a better future under them if voted into office, but they also had no legacy to stand upon. They lost in the election and at the tribunal, where they dragged the country's new president, alleging malpractices.
Obasanjo was head of state when Fela's mother encountered the danger of her life. Abubakar Atiku was vice president under Obasanjo for eight years. They both belonged to the PDP - the party the old military generals wanted to use to cancel the past and create a new future after damaging the country beyond repairs. Obasanjo has never said anything helpful to warrant any vote for his former second-in-command. Peter Obi has emerged as another freedom fighter from the fringe of the same PDP, where he was running mate to Atiku in the previous election. He chose the Labor Party for his fight to be president.
Atiku and Obi went to the tribunal, challenging Tinubu's victory after the latter's successful navigation of the slippery ground Buhari caused for his ascension. Both Atiku and Obi have vowed to proceed to the Supreme Court to challenge Tinubu's election. Observers say the two have assumed the role of freedom fighters. They believe the country is not accessible, the election is not, and they want a change. However, Tinubu's supporters rejoice over the outcome at the tribunal, while Atiku and Obi try to convince their supporters about their intention to seek the highest court's intervention.
They are legally entitled to pitch the challenge. At the same time, the new president works to convince Nigerians of a new day - allowing them three square meals a day, clothes on their backs and a roof over their heads, education accessible for the kids, and jobs for the youths so that the works and death of the country's past heroes and heroines like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti are not in vain.
