Paparazzi vs. Celebrities
26 December 2013 By Abiodun Giwa
The war between paparazzi and the celebrities has become a major source of debate among journalists, journalism students and the public.
Can paparazzi be classified as journalists and do they have the right to aggressively photograph celebrities against celebrities' approval?
Many journalists, students of journalism and the public answer these questions in the negative.
What are considered paparazzi's excesses from Britain to France to the United States will almost fill a book.
Just like the journalists and students of journalism, the public says paparazzi goes to a level of using equipment like a drown that gives them the capability of photographing celebrities from the air against celebrities will. Celebrities say they are not against being photographed as long as the photographers have their approval. But some observers say celebrities need and use the paparazzi to promote their shows; to remain in public view, having it their way and that paparazzi's choice to have it his own way has resulted in a moral equivalent of war.
Others say if the celebrities want to have it their way, use the paparazzi to promote their own shows and remain in public view, they say the paparazzi are also saying they are not products that can just used at will and be kept on sideline when not needed that they also have the freedom to do the work however way they choose. Paparazzi's apologists say that paparazzi also want to promote their own business like celebrities do with their photos and that means continuous streaming of photos.
The disagreement between paparazzi and the celebrities has often led to fist-cuffs, police arrests and charges in courts as well as defamation and privacy invasion suits. It is no longer strange to see paparazzi and celebrities fighting it out on the streets. Paparazzi wants to photograph and the celebrities delight in seizing paparazzi’s camera and paparazzi will fight it out to keep his equipment and the result has always been law enforcement intervention..
In recent times, the public has witnessed Alec Baldwin in duels with paparazzi struggling over the equipment; people have seen Kanye West in duels with paparazzi struggling over the equipment and people have seen Justin Bieber in duels with paparazzi over the right or no right to photograph him. The celebrity community in California is reported to encourage new laws to curb the excesses of paparazzi in storming their privacy. Yet, despite the war between the two, they cannot do without each other.
Some people say that paparazzi feel they are journalists in need of scoops for their editor who accept or buy the photographs from them. The story has devolved to the nucleus of paparazzi as former press photographers, who find being independent photographers more lucrative than remaining as press photographers and having the definition as celebrity photographers. Some say paparazzi are photo journalists; others say they are not press photographers and others don’t know how to classify paparazzi and the books say paparazzi don't have a code of conduct as it is not certain paparazzi is covered by journalism's code of conduct. (This is a continuing story as interviews for the piece is on going).
