Prigozhin's Death and Our Ways
26 August 2023 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
People die daily, but no one hears, or only their loved ones know. However, the public knows about deaths involving famous people and when a person dies in foul play. Prigozhin's demise in a plane crash falls into both noted and foul play suspected. Accusing fingers are going towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. The reason is Prigozhin's failed uprising against Russia about a month ago when he fell short a few miles into Moscow and exiled to Belarus. But why do people care about Prigozhin?
Was he a humanist or murderer? Was his service to Russia against Ukraine not paid for? He was not in Ukraine protecting humanity but desecrating it for money and the love of Russia. His death should be the Russians' concern. And why Putin spoke that he had warned him to watch his back.
But people are talking about the likelihood Putin knows about Prigozhin's death because of his inclination to cancel political opponents. Of course, that should worry Putin as a leader. However, none is acceptable - either removing opponents or killing them and accusing fingers raised based on his past precedence. What do we say about treading the same path?
Of showing a leading presidential candidate of an opposing political party the way to jail? Indictments are not only hanging on the candidate's neck, but prosecutors also seek quick court hearings, which the wary public views as a way to distract the candidate and end the campaign. It is much worse that it is happening in the world's number one democratic country.
Russia does not belong to any form of democracy. Prigozhin did not plant any good in contributing to Masacres in Ukraine. The evil in that country spreads to every of the world. However, he was not a preacher of any interest. He did not show a sense of worry until the evil went against him when his team came under attack by a country they defended and got paid for.
Preachers are supposed to live what they preach and not otherwise. When slave trading was about to end in Africa, some Europeans came with the Bible showing attrition and attacked the slave trade. If they went with the Bible first and later came with the slave trading, the public would have asked them to live what they preach. Africans are now asking the West to live the way of the Bible that they give to them. America preaches democracy and not the destruction of political opponents. One American leader recently portrayed Africa as possessing strong men instead of a democratic institution. But now, America indirectly shows African leaders how to handle political opponents in a democracy and that strong men are preferable to democracy.
Could you put them in jail the way America is doing? The Bible says you reap what you sow. There is a day for planting and a day for harvest. The African continent is already wary of tendencies by democratic leaders in the West to preach one thing and do a completely different something. Suppose Joseph Biden's administration succeeds at jailing Donald Trump and some of his supporters using Georgia's election case. In that case, it will be the end of transparency in democracy as other countries will copy the same or perfect what they are already doing and will cite America as an example.
Some African countries are already looking towards China and Russia. And it is displeasing America. South Africa has not condemned Russia for Ukraine's invasion. Neutrality is the best way to handle a friend you cannot trust. Or dine with the devil that you know rather than stick with a friend you cannot understand. It is also looking towards expanding the BRICS to include countries seeking a way other than the West. The current political outlook in the U.S. will not dampen the development but encourage it.
