Republican Party's endangered future
April 30 2016 By Abiodun Giwa
It is interesting to watch how the goal post has moved from Ohio to Wisconsin to the North East and to Indiana in the battle between some senior members of the Republican Party and Donald Trump, in the current presidential contest.
It is perfect to use the words 'some senior members' for the bigwigs in the party who are working against Trump, because with the published statement of John Boehner, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, about Ted Cruz, whom he describes as 'a miserable son of a bitch and Lucifer in the flesh', it is manifest that not all relevant senior members of the party are against Trump's candidature.
Therefore, it is fair to avoid the unfairness of lumping all senior members of the party together as Trump haters, since the party still has people like Boehner. Boehner's position has shown the big crack in the party, which can no longer be hidden and that Trump is not alone, with Cruz's response to Boehner's view of him as the former speakers inner Trump.
It is not a secret that there are senior members among the party's bigwigs who are Trump haters and who have explained the reasons for their hate and resolve to block his nomination. They say they are against Trump's plan to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, that he plans to deport illegal immigrants and that Muslims from Arab land should be barred temporarily from coming into the country until the U.S and leaders of those countries resolve issues on how to tackle Islamic terrorism. Some of the party leaders have gone as far as saying that if Trump is elected president, he would be a dangerous president and that he would put the country's economy in jeopardy.
Some of them have even dangerously described Trump as equal to Hitler! However election results have shown that millions of voters in the party don't share the bigwigs' view of Trump as a dangerous person. The media has also said that the reason that Trump is gaining momentum is for his immigration policy, which means it may partly be the reason that Trump is winning and his adversaries are losing. Trump has been scoring against his adversaries from Florida and Ohio, where his adversaries began their goalpost defense against Trump. After they lost to him in Florida and found that Trump's loss to John Kasich in Ohio was incapable of undermining Trump, they moved the goalpost further to Wisconsin. They defeated Trump in Wisconsin but found Cruz, their adopted candidate after Marco Rubio's fall could not stop Trump, they moved the goalpost further to the North East.
Trump's adversaries loss in the North East, where their adopted candidate lost so much that he became desperate to do anything in his bid to show his financiers and party leaders behind him that he is still in the race against news analysis that his candidature had been seriously damaged following his bruised loss in the North East, he moved the goalpost again, perhaps with the connivance of his financiers and bigwigs who have adopted him, embarked on bizarre announcement of a running mate and tongues began to wag, because Americans have never seen before now, where a losing candidate has announced a running mate. News reports said that Cruz said that the decision was to take the attention away from Trump and to force their wish and attention to to stop Trump into public consciousness.
From news reports, it is clear that Cruz may even have a plan that if he loses to Trump in Indiana, he may still move the goalpost further to California. Cruz has reportedly said saying he knows that he cannot make the 1237 magic number to qualify as a nominee and that Trump too will not make it. Cruz is obviously not working to win, but to stop Trump, so that his party can have a contested nomination at its convention, to help achieve the wish of some party leaders who don't want Trump as a nominee and enable them use outdated party rules to decide who will be the nominee, disregarding millions of votes gained by the front runner. The question right now is about what will happen if Trump eventually reaches the 1237 magic number?
It is obvious that some of the party leaders may walk away from the party, while some will remain to support Trump in the general election battle. imagine the amount of money these financiers and the party bigwigs working against Trump have spent in their bid to stop Trump, rather than find a way they can turn Trump's negative side into an asset. Observers speak of how these party bigwigs have played into the hands of liberals campaign against Trump's position on immigration and terrorism. Trump never said he was placing permanent ban on Muslims from Arab countries. What said was a temporary ban. But the media, largely represented by the liberal media, misrepresented Trump's words. The negative aspect of the wall he has for the border between the U.S and Mexico has been made louder than the positive aspect.
These party bigwigs and their financiers are indirectly at war with voters who have made Trump their choice, but thinking that Trump is their enemy. Or rather that voters in the party have chosen to be on Trump's side against these party bigwigs in preference for Trump's wishes against what the party bigwigs stand for. The most unpleasant scenario is the manifest division in the party that will ultimately lead to permanent splinter either Trump wins or the party goes into a contested nomination process. If Trump wins, some fence mending work is possible. But if the contested process is allowed, the Republican party will be like a chinaware that falls from a table and breaks into pieces, because many members will see it as a grievous injustice for a loser or anyone who has not been part of the primary election to emerge as nominee in modern day.
