July 5 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Americans celebrated 244th year of independence with fire works and aircraft displays amid continued political disagreements between the Republicans and the Democrats, and the fear of Covid-19 spread. The most apparent scenario was that Covid-19 could not scuttle the celebration that started at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, late Friday and continued with fireworks in various neighborhoods across the country to the early hours of Sunday.
"We believe in equal opportunity, equal justice and equal treatment of every citizen of every race, religion and creed, every child of every color, born and unborn is made in the hold image of God. We want free open debate and not speech with open codes and cancel culture. We embrace tolerance, not prejudice. We support men and women of law enforcement. We will never abolish our police. We believe our children should be taught to love their country, honor the history and respect our great American flag. We stand tall and proud. We only kneel to almighty God," President Donald Trump said in a remark at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, where he praised the founding fathers and vowed to ensure no one tears down their statues and history.
The American independence anniversary proved too much for Covid-19 to cancel outright. Some events may have been cancelled in some places for the fear of Covid-19 spread, but the thought that there should be no celebration at all by some political pundits for the fear of Covid-19, failed. First, July 4th is a public holiday every year. It is also a day known for fireworks and celebration of what many people see as the day of freedom.
Many people say that America may not be perfect, but that the country has achieved more than political enemies of President Trump will admit, between the year of independence in 1776 and today, and during the last three years that Trump has been president in his first term in office. People agree that Covid-19 has enveloped the country, and not the fault of anyone but the contagion and transmission nature of the virus. People speak of the good works of the founding fathers and the country's practice of democracy with the rule of law being replicated in many countries around the world.
Covid-19 and the death of George Floyd are two occurrences that that have poisoned the politics and the atmosphere, divided the country and seeking to blot the country's history, the founding fathers' credentials, as both positive and negative parts of the country's history are dug up for political reasons. And if one goes by what relentless enemies of the Trump say, one will think the election of Trump in 2016 when he defeated Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party is part of the unresolved political issues that has been tearing the country apart.
Americans heard so much about the determination of the Democrats and their media to make managing the country unbearable for Trump as a president, and that they are certain to catch him stepping on the system, because they say as a non-career politician he does not know much about political navigation to avoid the booby traps. The Democrats and their media have lived and fulfilled that promise.
The president was impeached when there was no ground for an impeachment. After the impeachment in which the senate absolved the president, the attack on him continued with a resolve by his political enemies and their media to deny him reelection. Just like the country's past history has become tainted, so also has the three years of Trump's presidency. The left wing politicians have been using Covid-19 for their condemnation of Trump's performance that he wants the economy open while America has lost over hundred thousand lives to the virus spread. But on Saturday there were news reports showing Hillary Clinton, Trump's opponent in 2016 election, saying she would not lock down country's economy if she is president. but will look for other ways to tackle the virus.
