Senegal and the United States Political Similarity Duel
17 April 2024 By Abiodun Kareem Giwa
What happens when a judge refuses to recuse himself when a defendant seeks to oust him from a case? Can such a judge continue on the case? Judge Juan Merchan handling the charge against President Donald Trump, is sitting tight despite the defendant's request to get off the case. The judge said Trump would go to jail if he disrupted the hearing as a threat. In another vein, the judge said Trump could not excuse himself from the court, even for family events. The judge talked directly to Trump and did not address the prosecutor or defendant.
Has the judge decided that Trump is the problem, and the prosecutor can not? Does that not mean convicting an accused ahead of the hearing? Is this not following the script that the intent of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is political, to drag the presidential candidate to disrepute? Is there no similarity between events in the United States and Senegal?
Senegal just concluded an election that witnessed a man sent to jail coming out and becoming president. He is now President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. President Donald Trump appears at a New York court in a case many people say is a target to stop him from the November election.
Senegal and the United States have different political histories.
People believe that the U.S. is the foremost democratic country worldwide, while Senegal's story is also heart-warming. However, both nations have similar experiences regarding the sitting government sending political opponents to prison in the current political scenario. Faye regained freedom and crowned his country's president. However, news reports show a striking difference between Faye's and Trump's issues. Faye was arrested and placed in jail but never charged for any offense, unlike Trump, who is facing various charges in New York, Florida, and Georgia courts.
No matter the number of charges and indictments against Trump, curious political observers question the legality of the cases against him. That places Trump on the same ground as Faye - a victim of political prosecution. It is uncertain what direction events could take if any judges handling Trump's cases decide to jail him. No one knew what was to happen when Faye was picked up and placed in jail.
Reports show that jailing Faye and another Senegalese opposition leader named Sonko caused tension, compelling parliament to pass an amnesty law to release the two opposition politicians to restore peace and allow the authority's failed plan to postpone the country's election. The duo's sudden release from jail changed the political calculation.
Most people in the United States say Trump will likely win in a free and fair election. Some ask whether it is true that Trump is leading in the polls. The answer is affirmative, and where he is not leading, he is showing a competitive edge. People say it is because of the country's economic condition and the government's decision to favor illegal migrants over American citizens in the disbursement of free loads. Most Democrats are also worried about their leader's lackluster performance.
Some think age is Biden's problem and seek an alternative candidate. The media is touting the possibility of President Biden dropping from the race in June, and Garvin Newsome of California may pick up the party's candidature. However, many black people ask what Kamala Harris's role in the White House would be as a vice president. Would she be expected to fall in line and continue as a vice presidential candidate? People say such an arrangement could tear the Democratic Party apart or make the African Americans switch their votes to another party.
Many people fear what jailing Trump may mean for the U.S. and how to manage events in such a circumstance. He is already the presumptive Republican Party nominee for president and the number one opposition leader. It appears his political enemies are determined to end him in jail. Pundits say Trump is like a dry bone in an enemy's neck whether he goes to jail or not, as sending him to jail may bolster his chances in the election because most people also believe cases against him are election interference.
The problem with the Democratic Party is its lack of credible plans to govern from the beginning, which is different from hounding Trump for applause. It is too late for the party to make a U-turn, leave Trump alone, and push public-spirited policies.
