The feud and vengeance in America's politics and effects
December 24 2018 By Abiodun Giwa
The government has been shut down in the United States, whether partially or fully. The re-opening for business will depend on a rethink by powerful Democratic Party senators to do the necessary.
But everyone is a witness to the fact that instead of doing the really necessary, it is the enactment of passing blames that has become an order. The White House is blaming the Democratic senators, and the Democratic senators are blaming the White House.
That the blame game has begun is no surprise to keen political observers here..The Democrats and the president are at loggerheads and their supporters in the media are not helping matters.
Apparently, President Donald Trump had said he would not sign any bill to keep the government open, if the bill fell short of the money for the border wall. Alas, the spending bill from the senate to avoid the shot down pushed to the president's desk fell short and the president refused to assent it.
The House hurriedly put another bill together and passed it the same day to avoid the calamity of a shot down, and expected the senate to do the necessary. However, the senate fell short of expectations for obvious reasons. Powerful forces in the among the senators opposed to President Trump said he would not get the money for the wall, despite thousands of caravan asylum seekers currently seeking to force their ways into the country.
For no other reason than the continuation of the feud over the 2016 election victory and loss. the president's opponents have said the wall is too costly and that building the wall would be a waste of money. They have said the wall is against the political culture in the country. They have advanced every possible reason against the wall.
There is nothing the opposition has not said to discourage and defeat of the president's desire toward the fulfillment of his campaign promise to keep America safe with a border-wall that would be difficult to scale over. Trump's adversaries know that an open border is not possible with the present circumstance of America being only paradise in the Americas and in the world, where everyone wants to live.
Yes, many people are saying that everyone should be welcome here, but in an orderly manner, to avoid chaos. It is to avoid the type of chaos currently in the southern border with Mexico that people think Charles Schumer and his Democratic colleagues in the senate need to do the necessary to pass the bill for the border wall. Americans don't expect the White House and the opposition to be senselessly at loggerheads.
The Democratic Party's candidate, Hillary Clinton, may have got the popular votes, but she obviously failed the Constitutional provisions to be declared president. Trump certified the Constitutional provisions and he became president, against the Democratic Party's great expectations. It is no reason for the Democrats to hold the country to ransom. This is the thought of many independent observers without political bias.
Thousands of Americans in the Federal Government's employment are in cross hairs here, because of few powerful people's failure to understand the impact their political bias and selfishness will cause to these workers. Many more hard-working Americans in their millions would file their taxes in January, but would be impacted with uncertainty about when they would get their returns, if these Democrats continue to insist on having a pound of Trump's flesh.
The Congress unwittingly thought it was right to approve billions in aid for rebuilding Syria, but denied America the same to do the necessary at home, 'cause Democratic legislators want to punish Trump. None voted for wall bill in the house and hopelessness of their support in the senate killed the forward journey to getting the votes taken. The Democrats are almost justified of their actions, considering the feud and vengeance that have become parts of the nation's politics.
The Democrats said the Republicans stood between President Barack Obama and his intentions and made things difficult for his administration. And that the Democrats too will do the same against the Republicans. And they are doing it already. The outcome of the 2016 elections has worsened the feud and vengeance, which seems to have begun with Democrats' determination to upend Trump's administration. There is a talk about town that some Republicans aided the impeachment call against President Bill Clinton over Monica Lewinsky saga, and that the Democrats are getting ready to be merciless against Trump if found to have shortcomings.
And sadly too, we are witnesses to Trump's reversal of almost all of Obama's programs. This raises a question about how long this feud and vengeance between Republicans and Democrats would continue and the desire for progress stalled against the country. Isn't there a need for a bipartisan effort to resolve this feud? Do one need to recommend that American law-makers in both parties read 'Beowulf' for them to understand the evil effects of feud and vengeance in a human society?
