The world situation: Are Politicians humanists or not?
19 February 2023 By Kareem Abiodun Giwa
A war is ongoing in Ukraine, a devastating and moral equivalent of a war earthquake in Syria and Turkey, and human conditions worldwide occasions endless political and economic struggle. Some leaders caused a self-inflicted financial imbroglio but blamed it on the war between Russia and Ukraine. Inflation has become a staple that ordinary citizens contend. Turkey and Syria continue pulling survivors and the dead from the rubble.
Humanity is imperiled. People are dying in Ukraine. The earthquake in Syria and Turkey killed more than known. But some leaders who have imperiled their people have failed to accept responsibility for their failures. Instead, they seek reelection, hoping to overcome or tell their compatriots to support and vote for their party rather than shut up.
Curious observers say politicians are not humanists and care about themselves and their cronies. They are selfish and greedy. Many Nigerians say President Muhammed Buhari should not have the audacity to campaign for the All-Progressive Party, APC, to remain in power in Nigeria. Buhari's policies and actions have made campaigning difficult for Bola Tinubu to run as the APC's presidential candidate. And Tinubu cannot disassociate himself from his party's failure.
Nigeria's political culture is one in which the rich win elections. However, the protagonists say the people have seen the light, and money has no role to play in this election. They also say the Naira swap by the government is to ensure money plays no role. But some Nigerians are also saying the Naira swap has rendered many Nigerians into unexpected poverty and temptation.
More than ever, the political situation in the United States has shown politicians are not humanists but rabble-rousers. They are careless about improving the human condition. Else, President Joseph Biden would not have canceled the oil project, allowed an open border, and destroyed the political legacy of an opponent's central desire to improve American lives. The stoppage of the Keystone XL Pipeline targeted to take the shine off Donald Trump, using climate change as an excuse. The open border is the same - using asylum seekers as guinea pigs.
These policies were not pro-improving American lives. With the resultant gas prices surging, trafficking at the border is proving. Of course, Buden resorted to blaming Putin's war for the increase in prices at the pump. The prices were up before the war. Despite these policies, Biden is waiting to announce reelection plans. And does he think he can win reelection with this performance amid the fear of recession? On the contrary, his supporters say he is the best that has happened to the United States.
Many Nigerians said voting for Buhari eight years ago was a mistake. They thought he was a humanist, and whoever became the next president among current contenders would be better than Buhari. Yet, there is a large number who, like eight years ago, when they were ready to commit anything to have Buhari, see a humanist in one Peter Obi, failing to understand what politicians are not and that they serve themselves and their base against their opponents.
Compared to the earlier years, the world situation could be better without anyone blaming climate change, avoiding human casualties in avoidable wars, and leaders committed to humanity than grandstanding.
