In Israel, immigrants without papers could go to jail for one year without trial according to a new Israeli law. The law is aimed at curbing what authorities in Israel called infiltration of the country by foreigners and the cause of a protest by African immigrants in Tel Aviv running to its second day, calling the attention of the international community to what some are already describing as a jungle justice.
In a report by Ynetnews, The United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, condemns what it describes as Israel's 'open' facility for warehousing asylum seekers and failing to properly examine the protesters' refugee claims.
The BBC reports that the new infiltration law empowers the government to jail any unprocessed immigrant for one year without trial.
The CNN's report is silent on the one year jail without trial and the Ynetnews merely reports that the law empowers government to send offenders to a long term of jail. However, one of the placards by one of the protesters says, "We are Refugees Tow years In Prison is Alot." Meaning that the protesters are scared about two years in jail without trial for alleged infiltration.
The mostly African migrants from Sudan and Eriteria are accusing the Israel authorities of calling them illegal immigrants despite their having filed asylum papers the government has refused to process. The immigrants claim that they are refugees because they have fled their countries due to internal conflicts in search of a safe abode due to internal , but the government is saying they are illegal immigrants.
