Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown
April 12, 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
Leadership requires ability to wade through difficulties arising from imperfection of humanity and human systems. When a leader is found to be responsible for an evil in his or her domain, such a leader loses integrity and on the way out of leadership.
Many leaders around the world whose countries are under the attack of coronavirus are experiencing the bitter part of leadership and they deserve out sympathy and not condemnation, for a plague not caused by any of them.
No one can say that the leader of any country in the world is the cause of the death of people in any of the countries. Therefore, it is a height of foolishness for anyone to declare any of the leaders as the cause of death either of the majority or minority group from coronavirus devastattion.
Coronavirus as a killer does not respect social grouping or color classification. No one can blame Giusepppe Conte for loss of lives in Italy. No one can blame Pedro Sanchez of Spain for the loss of lives in Spain. No one can blame Boris Johnson for the loss of lives in the United Kingdom. No one can blame the leader of any of other European countries for the loss of lives in their countries. And no can blame Donald Trump for the loss of lives in the United States.
Coronavirus has killed in virtually all countries of the world safe that some countries have higher casualties than others. Of course, it is apparent that opposition parties would seize opportunities of the misfortune that the current time and situation represent for the incumbent leaders to want to begin a political campaign for apportioning blame to gain traction towards fighting coming elections, a reminder of the type of argument between Oedipus and Tiresias in Oedipus the King by Sophocles, when a plague descended on the city ruled by Oedipus after a sterling performance by Oedipus that saved his people from an invading force.
No one knew the cause of the plague in the city. The elders asked Oedipus to allow a fact-finding. The outcome of the cause of the plague was unknown to Oedipus until he had forced a fact-finding that showed his marriage to his own mother (unknown to him) was the cause of the plague. Pointedly, the plague that troubled the Thebes was not wide-spread and was limited to the Thebes land, unlike today when the plague called coronavirus is showing deadly presence in all corners of the world.
Unhappily, the western countries where coronavirus has been periling lives and the economy are more open in political practice than other countries in other parts of the world where coronavirus has shown little devastation, except China. Manifestly, the major problem at tackling coronavirus comes from China's lack of openness. The media in the west, except in the case of few outlets, are doing little to nothing, to get China to tell the world the entire truth about the cause of coronavirus.
Instead of joining the few outlets that are calling on China to speak out, the liberal media in the United States is doing all in its fact findings to hold President Trump accountable for coronavirus. In a situation where Trump has not been fingered as the cause of death, some liberal commentators are saying that the country failed to act early enough to save lives. Public opinion has said that Trump has performed wonderfully well in handling the coronavirus crisis; doing daily press briefings and praising the panel he has set up headed by Vice President Mike Pence for doing a good job. Just as he makes efforts to wade against the cause of death, he is fighting in the economic front to ensure coronavirus does not destroy the economy, while at the same time struggling to get help to workers, small and big businesses as well as ensuring the entire system is not compromised. Some in the media has praised the press briefings the president holds everyday until they begin to find problems with the press briefings as turning to a campaign mode.
Meaning they don't want the president to gain anything from his performances. The president's earlier poll rating was high for his handling of the crisis and now that the poll is downward, they want to use the poll to judge the president's performance in handling the entire crisis. Is a poll result suppose to be permanent? Is it not supposed to be switching based on changing situation? Does it mean that the poll rating for handling the crisis has gone down that it will not go up again? Is it fair for the president to be be judged harshly and be condemned on that note?
The question is that most of the people that are judging the president negatively has not managed anything close to being in a position of leadership for them to understand what it means to be in a position of leadership and for them to know that uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. It is easy to sit before a computer to judge and condemn. Give them a position of responsibility and see the uselessness they will manifest.
