Wanted: Leadership flexibility and redirection
21 March 2022 By Abiodun Giwa
Usual for organizations to measure performance to avoid failure. Evaluation is a popular metric among public businesses to embrace success. Performance evaluation ensures a change of direction from a path that does not guarantee expectations. However, evaluation is useless without leaders ready to embrace the report of findings and support recommendations.
Leaders are flexible, embrace helpful ways, not rigidly, and walk into failure because their success or failure is bound to impact the community. Presidents Joseph Biden of the United States of America and Vladimir Putin of Russia are two leaders at the top of the hierarchy in their respective countries considered the world superpowers whose policies put them on the spot needing redirection.
Putin is currently waging an unpopular war in Ukraine. His fame has been deemed at home and abroad for commanding a murderous attack on another sovereign nation, leading to the death of defenseless people, including women and children. There is a consensus among people that Putin needs a change of direction to achieve whatever his desires are in Ukraine. Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Alekseevich Nebenzya, has said that the war in Ukraine will end when Russia has achieved the aim of a special operation in Ukraine. But no one knows the purpose of this unique process. Other than seeing a type of violence and destruction beyond human comprehension.
Biden's policies are not only confusing. Analysts believe his policies have taken America away from the path of progress and respect. The immigration policy is as dark as hell allowing undocumented immigrants to swell the country's borders, and the administration does not seem to possess a solution. The same applies to the economy. The oil price at the gas station has jumped beyond $4.00 before the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. inflation rate has risen to 7.0 before the war in Ukraine. The turmoil within his party over the government's spending bill and inability to pass the bill for the president's assent.
The similarity between Biden and Putin is apparent. They both wear the same shoes foisting unpopular policies. And in need to chart a new direction to avoid failure. Police in Russia arrested hundreds of protesters for expressing opposition to the war in Ukraine. The country has announced a new law that protesters against the war risk going to jail for 15 years. Propaganda says the war in Ukraine is a war between Russia and America in Ukraine is far from reality. Americans are crying about the pain at the pump and the rising inflation rate. Biden said the rise in gas prices at the pump is Putin's handiwork, and the war in Ukraine causes inflation in America. Far from reality.
Observers worldwide expect Putin to stop the war and seek a humane direction to address whatever problem he has with the Ukrainians. Killings and the destruction of humanity should be the last resort. Destruction distorts society and paints Putin as heartless, ruthless, and a butcher. On the other hand, stopping the war will paint Russia as responsive. And that authoritarianism does not mean a lack of empathy.
Biden needs to address his ineptitude. Listen to Americans and desist from passing the bucks. He should understand he is different from Putin as a democratically elected president and therefore be a shining example of a responsive leader. The border issue needs attention. The rising gas prices and inflation require understanding that outsiders do not cause them. The economy in America needs protection from further deterioration in the long run. Therefore, the war in Ukraine needs to end than be prolonged.
