W.H.O director threatens many more body bags
April 8 2020 By Abiodun Giwa
The number of death from coronavirus has increased to 85,000 worldwide. People live in fear all over the world, in countries where many people are dying and countries still not seriously affected by the virus.
Amid death all all over the world, the World Health organization, W.H.O, is struggling with the accusation of dereliction of duty and many calls for the resignation of its head, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"If you don't want many more body bags you refrain from politicizing it - please quarantine politicizing COVID, Dr. Ghebreyesus reportedly said in a remark by W.H.O meant for President Donald Trump, who had mentioned possibility of the United States' of stopping further money to W.H.O for the way the organization has been accused of handling COVID before the virus's transmission to other parts of the world from China.
The moment Ghebreyesus's words came on the television, the scramble for verification began because of the mention of "If you don't want many more body bags you refrain from politicizing." What is the politics in questioning the way that W.H.O is doing its work? Is WHO not funded by tax payers money? Unfortunately, the way we view public policy differs from person to person and from organization to organization.
What you get from the Fox News is different from what you get from the CNN and the MSNBC or the New York Times and the Guardian. The Fox news is a conservative outlet in a fight to tackle the overt politicization of criticisms of Trump from numerous liberal media outlets. As at the time I write this, the New York Times has yet to publish a report about the W.H.O imbroglio. Discussion on CNN is about Trump's lashing on governors over outbreak.Discussion on the MSNBC was on the mail-in voting and it does not work out for Republicans and the Guardian's latest report was on the W.H.O response to its dereliction of duty. Of course, the mail-in voting as well as Trump lashing of W.H.O and W.H.O's response to the accusation of its dereliction are all within the parameters of definition of news based on the 24 hours news cycle.
The angle that the Fox News approached the news is different from the angle that Guardian approached the presentation of the news. The Fox headline reads "WHO director hits back at Trump threat to defund agency" and the Guardian's caption reads "Now is not the time WHO funds, say official after Trump threat." And the Guardian follows with a rider "US president and supporters have accused organization of being biased towards China." The Guardian did not mention "If you don't want many more body bags you refrain from politicizing." credited by Fox News to Dr. Ghebreyesus.
The Guardian report said that the current row came as the US recorded its highest toll from the virus of 1800 in a single day. The report said further that the latest flare-up, which appears designed to distract attention from trump's record during the outbreak, has fueled concerns among WHO insiders that the campaign could dangerously undermine confidence in the organization's advice at a crucial time.
The current issue about WHO is its handling of the coronavirus before the virus found its way to other parts of the world. Trump and his supporters are not alone in the accusation against WHO. How the Guardian arrived at its conclusion that it is Trump and his supporters that have accused WHO is problematic. It raises a question about what has become public opinion and the media reporting of it without attributing to politicians and their supporters.
As an individual, I have questioned Dr. Ghebreyesus's statement urging continued travel to and from China in a write up on February 1. I thought that such a statement coming from the head of WHO was questionable, because I felt it was dangerous to make people believe it was not fatal to continue traveling to China at that point in time. i believed that given the level of transmission in China at the time, more people would have traveled out of China to other parts of the world, possibly to Europe and America, to escape the eyes of darkness that had engulfed China but was yet to be seen in other parts of the world.
WHO is a public organization and funded by tax payers' money. The threat that has caused the current brouhaha about WHO is its alleged dereliction by one of the governments that fund the organization. Although, it is only Trump that has spoken about defunding WHO, there are other governments that have spoken against WHO's apparent dereliction. As a public organization funded by tax payers' money, WHO officials ought to know they would be under intense scrutiny especially at a time of pandemic when lives are being lost as if humans have become guinea pigs.
Reading the Guardian's report about African leaders rising in defense of Ghebreyesus is a height of politicizing a matter that is purely a policy issue that requires accountability from WHO officials, instead of them accusing people who have the the right to ask questions about their roles in the defense of innocent people against coronavirus.
